When you picture a day in Playa del Carmen, most often one thinks about relaxing on the dreamy white sand beaches, swimming in the glistening turquoise waters and soaking up the laid back bohemian vibes. On the surface Playa del Carmen might just look like a really nice beach and some tourist attractions – but there are some hidden gems beyond the surface. Here are 6 places to go that are a little off the typical beaten path.

Alux Restaurant

Located just outside the center of Playa del Carmen, This local fusion restaurant is quite literally a hole in the wall! The cave/cenote setting is definitely a unique way to switch up your dining experience.

Open only in the evenings, The Alux (pronounced “Aloosh”) restaurant has a very romantic vibe – and a dress code. For men, a button up shirt and pants are needed. And for the ladies, a basic dress or flowey pants with a blouse will do just fine! If you’re planning on just grabbing a bevy with your babe in the lounge, a little more casual will be okay.
*Note; It’s warmer down there then you think, so wear cool clothing.

Serving local fusion of Mayan, Mexican and International haute cuisine – $25 – $50 (USD) will get you a high-end plate of food. If anything, at the very least you can have a drink and take a walk through a quick loop of the caves. Le Lotus Rouge

This place takes unique to a whole different level, so be sure to bring your camera.

Picture a wild, circus-like restaurant covered in knick-knacks, art and has a different theme every night of the week. 
Rated 5 stars on trip advisor and open Mon. – Sat., 3:00 p.m – 11:00 p.m. Here you will find a friendly mix of locals and tourists. Gluten free and vegan options are available.

El Jardin de Marieta

If you’re not paying attention – you just might miss this hidden jewel. Situated between Calle 6 and 8, this charming little spot is worthy of your time. 

This thought provoking art gallery has a beautiful display of local artists and Gastón Charó. From acrylics to carvings – there is a little bit of everything here. The setting has lush gardens and a stone walkway, making the vibes pretty dreamy and whimsical.

Visit Punta Esmeralda Beach

Just north of the Paradisus resort, there is a small beach access road that is  right on 5th Avenue near Calle 110 Norte. Most visitors don’t even know this hidden beach is here.

Besides the peace and quiet, there is a crystal clear, open cenote for the whole family to enjoy.

Bring your swimsuit, beach towel, umbrella, biodegradable sunscreen, camera and a couple bucks to indulge in some potential food vendors and enjoy the different pace to this Playa del Carmen beach has to offer.

As you head downtown to the northern, quieter end of Playa del Carmen you’ll be surprised by the impressive and colorful street art you will find scattered down the streets.

The Public Place

Pub food, live music and cool people –This place is as close to your typical cozy home town pub that you can expect to find in the Mexican Caribbean.

Rated 4.5 stars on trip advisor, the pub is affordable and perfect while you’re out for a night stroll.
