Cozumel is a Mexican Caribbean island city that is about 2 hours from Cancun, and although those interested in visiting the popular vacation destination can fly into Cancun International Airport, Cozumel has its own airport as well. The difference is there are typically a higher number of direct flights going to Cancun, but now more new direct flights to Cozumel from the U.S. and Canada have recently been announced. It is from these two countries that many of the 5 million annual Cozumel tourists come from, as it is a favorite destination among American and Canadian travelers.
Cozumel International Airport is much smaller than Cancun International Airport, only servicing a little more than 500,000 passengers last year. More visitors are expected to fly into Cozumel’s airport this year as the island paradise continues to grow in popularity and more direct flights are added. The airport is easier to navigate due to its smaller size and takes less time to get through due to the smaller number of travelers who use the airport.
Back in October, a new once-weekly American Airlines flight from Charlotte to Cozumel was added. The flight takes about three hours, and tickets typically fall into the $300 – $400 range for one-way tickets. Charlotte-Douglas International Airport is the 5th largest airport in the world.

Now, as of November, even more flights from the U.S. to Cozumel are available. American tourists can now fly direct to the Mexican Caribbean vacation destination from the following U.S. cities that were unavailable before:
- Philadelphia to Cozumel – American Airlines
- Houston to Cozumel – Southwest Airlines
- Denver to Cozumel – Southwest Airlines
The Houston flight is available every Sunday for the time being, and the Denver flight will be available every Saturday until December 31st of this year.
New direct flights from a number of Canadian cities also began this month. Although many are only temporarily available, that is not to say they won’t be added back later on. The new flights from Canada include:
- Montreal to Cozumel – AirCanada
- Toronto to Cozumel – Westjet
- Toronto to Cozumel – AirCanada
The Westjet Toronto flight will be available through April 29, 2023, and will arrive once a week. The AirCanada Toronto flight will be available once a week until December 18th and then three times a week from December 20th to April 9, 2023. From April 13-30, 2023, there will be two weekly AirCanada Toronto to Cozumel flights, one on Thursday and one on Sunday.
These flights open up the opportunity for many more American and Canadian tourists to explore all that the island of Cozumel has to offer, which is a lot. Of course, many people go to Cozumel for the beautiful beaches characterized by their white sand and aqua-blue waters, but there is much more to see on and around the island. Due to its location, one of the best sights to see is actually under the water, where you’ll find amazing coral reefs that are part of one of the largest reef systems in the world.
For this reason, the waters surrounding the island of Cozumel are one of the top diving destinations in the Mexican Caribbean. But the island itself also has a lot to offer, specifically the downtown area. Here, within a charming five-block area, you’ll find shops, restaurants, and bars where you can immerse yourself in the local culture of the island.
Flights to Cozumel from the U.S. and Canada are always changing. This means now is the time to take advantage of these flights if you want the opportunity to explore this beautiful, laid-back Mexican Caribbean island destination.
