2 Chain Restaurants In Cancun And Playa del Carmen Targeted In Shootings

Last Updated

Two locations of the chain restaurants known as Tortas Goyo were attacked by gunmen Wednesday, the authorities are still investigating the case. As things stand though there have been no casualties or injuries to report in either instance. Still, the fact that two locations of the same restaurant were shot at has perplexed authorities who are set to continue looking into the case.

How Things Went Down In The Cancun Restaurant

The Cancun restaurant located within the Supermanzana 101 neighborhood along the carretera costera was allegedly the first location to be hit. That fact is disputed, as certain sources claim otherwise. According to eyewitnesses there were staff and customers at the restaurant when the shooting took place. However, they were able to spot the two gunmen before they opened fire on their location. What they decided to do was essentially barricade themselves inside the restaurant, although the gunmen opened fire against the building no one was seemingly injured in the incident.

No one was injured, but there was a sense of mass hysteria in the streets after the incident. That potentially allowed the shooters to drive away before the police arrived. When the situation was reported to police they decided to send units to all of the “Tortas Goyo” locations within the Cancun region to try and prevent any further attacks against the restaurants. They were too late though to be able to stop the attack on the Playa del Carmen location.

Eye Witness Accounts Of The Shooting Of The Playa del Carmen Restaurant

According to reports the attack on the Playa del Carmen location of the famous restaurant chain happened almost at the same time that the incidents in Cancun took place. In Playa del Carmen there was only one reported shooter. The man arrived on foot to the location and opened fire against the front entrance of the restaurant. As was the case with the Cancun spot none of the people that were in or near the location were injured.

Eye witnesses report that a man shot 3 times at the entrance of the restaurant, not necessarily aiming at any particular person that happened to be nearby. After essentially completing his task he got away on foot towards the nearby boulevard. After his initial getaway on foot he hopped on as a passenger in a motorcycle that arrived a couple of blocks away, and the two suspects were able to get away from police. Who, as we mentioned before, was potentially already on their way to secure that Playa del Carmen location, but were just a bit late.

These Attacks Are Potentially Linked To A Wider Dispute Against The Owner of The Restaurant Chains

Currently there are plenty of theories floating around as to why these attacks took place. The police continue to investigate the case, but will likely keep further details hidden from the public. The fact remains though that this is about the 4th time this year that restaurants owned by the person who manages both Tortas Goyo are hit by gunmen.

Corded Off Restaurant

The Cancun Tortas Goyo location had already suffered an attack in February where an employee of the restaurant was injured. In that instance the attacker was identified through security cameras and later arrested. Also, a pizzeria that is said to be property of this same person was attacked by gunmen in Chetumal.

Upon their arrival the local police force restricted access to the area, people who were actually in line to order when the attack took place left the facility anyway. It’s unclear whether both locations will remain closed as the investigation continues its course. In any case, police have vowed to be on high alert near the restaurants that are owned by this local businesswoman.
