CANCÚN, MEXICO – The bustling Cancún International Airport (CUN), a gateway to the Mexican Caribbean’s sun-drenched beaches and vibrant nightlife, has reported a significant 9.1% decrease in passenger traffic for February 2024 compared to the same month last year, according to airport operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR). This decline, primarily driven by a drop in international arrivals, signals a shifting dynamic in the region’s tourism landscape.

While CUN maintains its position as Mexico’s second busiest airport after Mexico City International Airport (AICM), the numbers paint a clear picture of a changing travel pattern. February saw a total of 2.74 million passengers pass through the airport, a decrease of over 245,000 compared to the previous year. Notably, international traveler numbers fell by 11%, from 2.03 million in February 2023 to 1.81 million in February 2024.
Domestic traffic also experienced a downturn, albeit less dramatic, with 680,189 travelers, a 3.6% decline.

The Tulum Effect:
Analysts attribute the decline to several factors, most prominently the rise of the newly inaugurated Tulum International Airport. Operated by the Mexican military under Grupo Olmeca-Maya-Mexica, Tulum has rapidly emerged as a strong competitor, diverting a portion of the region’s traffic. Its swift growth, exceeding initial projections, has contributed to the overall decrease in passenger numbers at CUN.
“The opening of Tulum International Airport has undeniably impacted traffic flow,” stated a spokesperson for a local tourism association. “Travelers heading to the southern Riviera Maya are increasingly opting for the convenience of flying directly into Tulum.”

Wider Regional Trends:
The decline at CUN is part of a broader trend observed across ASUR’s Mexican airports, which collectively reported a 7.5% dip in passenger traffic compared to February 2024. Notably, Cozumel (-18.9%), Huatulco (-6.1%), and Tapachula (-13.5%) also experienced significant decreases.
Conversely, ASUR’s airports in Colombia and Puerto Rico reported increases, highlighting the varied performance across the company’s portfolio.

Impact on Travelers:
For tourists planning a trip to Cancún, this shift could translate into several potential benefits:
- Competitive Pricing: Airlines and resorts may offer more attractive deals to fill seats, potentially leading to lower fares and package discounts.
- Reduced Crowds: A slight decrease in passenger volume could result in less congestion at the airport and popular tourist destinations.
- Enhanced Service: Increased competition may prompt businesses to prioritize customer service, resulting in improved amenities and personalized experiences.
- Regional Exploration: The emergence of Tulum encourages travelers to explore the southern Riviera Maya, offering a wider range of experiences beyond Cancún’s traditional hotspots.

Industry Response:
Local tourism officials are emphasizing the need to adapt to the changing landscape. “Cancún remains a premier destination,” stated a representative from the Cancún Hotel Association. “We are focusing on diversifying our offerings and enhancing the overall visitor experience to maintain our competitive edge.”
While the numbers indicate a shift, Cancún continues to be a major tourism hub. Travelers are advised to stay informed about flight schedules and airport updates and take advantage of potential travel deals.
