Cancun & Area Beaches Remain Open While Bars Must Close

The Mayors of Cancun and Playa Del Carmen have announced that the beaches will remain open despite an increased epidemiological warning level. Cases of Covid-19 have surged in the region and the Governor has announced that the northern part of the state will revert back to an ‘orange’ warning level. 

Beaches in the popular resort town of Tulum will also remain open.

With the new ‘orange’ warning level starting on January 25th, many tourism related businesses will be affected. Here is everything travelers need to know about the new restrictions. 

Bars, Discos & Nightclubs 

Effective January 25th, all bars, discos and nightclubs have been forced to close in northern Quintana Roo. This includes the resort destinations of Cancun, Playa Del Carmen and Tulum.

Hotels & Restaurants

Restaurants will continue to operate but must follow strict protocols including a maximum capacity of 30%. Restaurant will be open for both dine in and take out and there are currently no restrictions on the service of alcohol.

Resorts and hotels will remain open including all amenities such as pools, gyms, restaurants and spas. Hotels must cut back total occupancy to 30% of rooms and enforce 30% capacity in all public areas and amenities.

Public and Resort Beaches

All beaches will remain open but will operate at a maximum of 30% capacity being patrolled by state and local law enforcement. 

Alcohol is still prohibited on all beaches in Cancun, Playa Del Carmen and Tulum.

Cancun Mayor Mara Lezama stated that she wasn’t surprised about the roll back to an orange level warning for the city. 

“People thought that the disease was over and that the virus is gone, it’s not gone, it’s still here. We are still in the middle of a pandemic,” Lezama stated. 

Cancun and Playa Del Carmen Respond to U.S. Travel Restrictions

Resorts and clinics around Quintana Roo have quickly adapted to news of mandatory testing for U.S. travelers returning home. Many resorts began offering on-site free Covid-19 testing for guest while testing clinics sprung up overnight offering affordable solutions for all travelers. As a last resort travelers may also get tested at the Cancun international airport.

New Quarantine Order For U.S. Travelers

President Joe Biden signed an executive order requiring all U.S. travelers to follow CDC recommended guidelines for self-quarantine when they return from international travel.  It’s unclear at this time if the quarantine order  will be mandatory as no formal  measures or communication have been announced by the U.S. State Department.
