Cancun Is The Most Sought After Destination In Mexico For Beginning Of April

Travelers are making plans for the beginning of April, and it looks like all sights are set on Cancun. Easter this year falls on the first week of April, and hotel reservations are reportedly up by 125% throughout Cancun just in time for the celebration.

This jump is the biggest increase in hotel bookings throughout the country, making Cancun the most sought-after destination in all of Mexico for the first week of April.

Easter Week is typically a busy travel season in Mexico, and with many locals having time off, they take advantage and book a trip. This year, that high season will be between April 2-8.

Domestic travel did decrease in Mexico over the past few years due to the pandemic, and this report noted that the travel booking trends they are noticing in 2023 are reminiscent of pre-pandemic levels, meaning that Cancun and other much sought-after destinations will be busy and bustling.

“Travelers are also very interested in going outside the country and not only to destinations in the United States but even taking advantage of this time to visit Europe, something that has not been seen since 2019. However, at the national level, we also see positive behavior,” said  Alejandro Sánchez, manager of Loyalty and Financial Alliances at Despegar, a Mexican travel booking website.

Easter Week, translated as “Semana Santa” in Spanish, is one of the biggest holidays of the year in Mexico. Locals either take a vacation or spend the week in their home cities celebrating the holiday with families.

Cancun Is Having A Great Tourism Year

The tourism numbers in Cancun didn’t disappoint in 2021 and 2022. For starters, Cancun International Airport recorded the busiest day of all time in December of last year, and the tropical beach destination was also a favorite amongst U.S. travelers during the summer of 2022. 

On top of that, hotel occupancy rates were over 80% throughout the region, with over 70,000 travelers on the daily. Those in the industry are expecting the tourist numbers in the next few weeks to increase to that amount if not more.

These numbers also come as positive news for local business owners in the Mexican Caribbean destination. Cancun restaurants and other tourist-related businesses in the destination are hoping that this popular travel week will bring them big business.

Cancun is currently the most sought-after destination for Easter Week this year, and other top contenders include the Pacific coast cities of Puerto Vallarta, Tijuana, and Mazatlan, not to mention the Yucatan favorites like Merida.
