The new Tulum International Airport that is currently being built will be another great option for travelers who visit the Mexican Caribbean and of course the city itself.
It will also take some pressure off the super busy Cancun International Airport, which manages more than 500 operations a day on average.
While the Tulum Airport was originally looking at a 2024 opening, Mexico’s president recently announced that the project would be completed ahead of schedule.
About Tulum Airport
The building of Tulum Airport, also known as Felipe Carrillo Puerto, is a mega project that will span nearly 3,000 acres.
It will be a combined civil/military airport and will be part of a larger military city that will include multiple buildings, including a building for boarding lounges and a passenger terminal.
Roads, parking lots and/or structures, and a control tower are all part of the project as well, as are the typical buildings and structures you see on a military base.

Location Of The Airport
The airport will actually be located in the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.
This is about an hour from Tulum, but a major highway will connect the airport region to Tulum, making getting there from the popular tourist destination simple.
Both Felipe Carrillo Puerto and Tulum are part of the Mexican state Of Quintana Roo, the same state that is home to other vacation hotspots like Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, and Cancun.

When You Can Expect Tulum Airport To Begin Operations
The original completion date for the Tulum Airport was said to be sometime in 2024.
But a recent update from Mexico’s president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, now points to it being completed this year.
Now he is saying that completion will come at the same time that the huge Maya Train project will be completed, which is December 2023.

Tulum Airport And The Maya Train
Both Tulum Airport and the Maya Train, which is also currently under construction, will make traveling to areas in the Riviera Maya outside of Cancun more accessible.
The airport in Tulum will be able to serve as many as 4 million passengers annually, making it the Yucatán Peninsula’s second largest airport, only behind Cancun.
There will be a Maya Train stop at the New Tulum Airport too, connecting these two massive projects to make getting around for tourists much easier and opening up access to many more destinations without having to travel all the way from Cancun Airport.
