There are more flights from Canada to Cancun this winter than at any point in history. Both tourists and the local tourism industry are thrilled about the impressive feat as the Mexican Caribbean projects a record-breaking fall and winter season this year. Average fares for hotels and flights are set to increase, and travelers are being encouraged to book early to lock in the best rates.
Canadian tourists can choose from up to 27 non-stop routes to Cancun over the winter. More flights have been scheduled for the upcoming season as authorities project strong growth in travel to the Mexican Caribbean. The high season, which starts in November and lasts until April, is one of the busiest times for the region, which welcomes millions of North Americans in search of warm weather and tropical beaches.
Canada is the second most important market for inbound tourism in Cancun after the United States. The Mexican Caribbean has for long been one of the top destinations for Canadians, who choose the stunning tropical location for its affordable prices, warm weather, and unbeatable hospitality.
The record-breaking amount of non-stop flights this winter corroborates Canadians’ growing appetite for Cancun’s year-round sunshine and white-sand beaches. With 27 direct flights from across all corners of the country, it’ll be easier than ever before to hop on a flight to the Mexican Caribbean.
According to tourism industry sources, more than 85% of flights are already sold out for the high season. The same can be said for hotels across Cancun and the Riviera Maya, which are gearing up for one of the busiest years on record. High demand is also pushing up average nightly rates in places like Playa del Carmen.

In a recent interview, Jesús Almaguer Salazar, head of the Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association, said that Canada is one of the fastest markets to recover for inbound tourism. In October, Canada removed the last of its COVID-related entry restrictions, and returning tourists no longer have to quarantine. Travel figures are expected to skyrocket following the decision as millions of people across Canada set their sights on their next tropical vacation.
During COVID-imposed lockdowns, the availability of flights from Canada to Cancun dropped sharply as borders were closed, airline staff were laid off, and people were confined to their homes. In 2022, the situation has dramatically changed, and tourists are once again getting a taste of international travel.
Canadian travelers can catch a flight to the Mexican Caribbean from all of the country’s major airports, including Toronto, Montreal, and Calgary. A one-way 4-hour flight from Toronto to Cozumel costs some $482 on Air Canada throughout November, with slightly cheaper airfare for Cancun flights.
Passengers from Calgary can catch a flight to Cancun in January for just $290 with a 1-hour layover, although non-stop flights are also available for $387 on the same dates.
Meanwhile, budget-conscious travelers can opt for Air Transat, with one-way flights from Montreal to Cancun for as little as $380 in December. Sunwing Airlines is another budget-friendly alternative, which also offers all-inclusive vacation packages.
Canadians aren’t the only nationality with a growing interest in traveling to Cancun. The city’s airport recently ranked among the top 10 busiest in the world for international passenger traffic, a testament to the region’s stellar reputation as a leading tourism hotspot. Over the course of the year, more than 26 million tourists are expected to walk through Cancun International Airport’s busy gates.
U.S. and Canadian travelers are also set to benefit from new border crossing technology this winter, which uses digital passport and boarding card readers to speed up entry into the country.
