Cancun has been the top destination for American travelers during the pandemic but a new announcement by the Biden administration could have a huge impact on the number of U.S. travelers headed south.
President Joe Biden announced that all Americans returning home from abroad will be required to quarantine as per guidelines recommended by the CDC. Although no exact number of days was given, the CDC states that quarantine measures should be a minimum of 7 days.
“In addition to wearing masks, those who fly to the United States from another country, must do a coronavirus test before getting on the plane, and self-quarantine when they arrive in the United States,” said the US president in press conference.
There has been lots of confusion over the announcement as many Americans are debating whether the quarantine is recommended or mandatory and how it will be enforced.
The exact wording in the Presidential Proclamation states Americans returning home are “required to comply with other applicable CDC guidelines concerning international travel, including recommended periods of self-quarantine or self-isolation after entry into the United States.
Hotel group boss Abelardo Vara Rivera warns that there could be layoffs as initial occupancy estimates may fall well below expectations.
According to ASUR, flights into Cancun International Airport reported a drop in frequencies with only 286 national and international arrivals on Tuesday compared to over 500 during the peak holiday season.
