Cozumel has just opened three of its recently renovated viewpoints just in time for a record-breaking high season that’s around the corner and approaching fast. One of the most beautiful spots on the entire Mexican Caribbean, Cozumel has long since wowed the scores of travelers who visit its shores each year, but the absence of three of its most popular viewpoints will undoubtedly have left travelers to the island feel like they missed out on some of the most attractive views that it has to offer.
Thankfully, with the renovation efforts finally complete, that’s not going to be the case any longer, as travelers are now free to visit the Cozumel locations as they wish. Here’s everything you need to know about the three scenic viewpoints reopening to the world, including why they were closed, where they are located and what travelers can expect from these beaches this winter.
Viewpoints Reopen – Information For Travelers
On Thursday, the municipal president of Cozumel, Juanita Alonso Marrufo, officially reopened three viewpoints on the eastern shores of the island to the public following a substantial and long-overdue period of renovation. The viewpoints were originally closed due to damage suffered at the hands of adverse weather conditions and storms that battered the island, leaving them in a damaged and dangerous state, whilst historic lack of maintenance caused their condition to deteriorate.

Work began on restoring viewpoints back to their former glories back in July and cost a substantial figure, running up a bill of almost one million pesos – but for the local administration, their value to the island is priceless. Speaking about the completed renovations at the inauguration of the viewpoints, President Juanita Alonso Marrufo stressed the importance of having a place to meet, admire the natural beauty of the island, and take a souvenir photo.
The most badly affected viewpoint was located in the one in Chumul. Located at Playa Chumul, the newly reopened and renovated viewpoint offers stunning views of the cerulean Caribbean Sea, providing travelers with the perfect spot to make memories and their friends stuck in the snow back home jealous. Rustic and wooden, the viewpoint is around a 15-minute drive away from the western side of the island and is highly rated by travelers on Google reviews.
The second renovated viewpoint is located close to the Chumul viewpoint at Playa Chen Rio. Perhaps the least popular of the three viewpoints to be renovated, it offers stunning views of the white sand beach and the deep blue sea behind it. As a destination that’s notably less busy than other beaches on the island, it could well prove to be the perfect place to relax on the island this winter as thousands look to descend upon it in the coming months.
Fortunately for travelers, the third renovated viewpoint could also find itself with a backdrop of a relatively empty beach this winter. Located at the gorgeous Playa San Martin, like the other two viewpoints, this also offers amazing views of the Caribbean Sea, making it an ideal place for a picturesque holiday snap. This beach also benefits from being on the eastern shore of the island, with travelers typically favoring the beaches on the western side, meaning that there’s a good chance of finding plenty of space on the beach here.
As if viewpoints weren’t enough of a reason to visit this half of the island, the president’s inauguration of the beauty spots also brought another reason to check them out – turtles. To mark their reopening, the president released 75 green turtles onto the beach near the San Martin viewpoint – a perfect way to celebrate the reopening of such in-demand attractions as high season approaches.
