Officials Give Green Light To MUSA Expansion

The museum recently received permission from environmental officials to expand the number of underwater sculptures and is in talks with Cancun’s Nautical Association to add at least two new exhibitions to improve the quality of Cancun’s marine wildlife.

According to MUSA, there are plans to add some 45 new underwater sculptures in the El Meco and Cruz de la Bahía in a significant step forward for the museum, which wants to contribute to the environmental protection of Cancun’s coral reefs while showcasing local art.
In a press interview, Roberto Díaz Abraham, the president of the MUSA underwater museum, said that officials have approved the addition of up to 300 new sculptures in the long run.
He also added that the museum would be installing the new sculptures over the coming months as soon as the right environmental conditions are met.
“We will continue to sink new artwork, which will put MUSA on people’s radar. Our work helps create more underwater life, and allows tourists to see sculptures that have been underwater for over 8 years as well as newer ones,” Abraham added.
The recently-announced expansion will further boost MUSA’s reputation as one of the world’s leading underwater museums. While similar projects exist in other countries, MUSA stands out for its environmental protection and conservation efforts, which are important for preserving Cancun’s delicate coral reefs.

MUSA is also an accessible attraction for travelers, and most of its sculptures are located in shallow waters, making it a great choice for beginners. Most importantly, MUSA’s stunning sculptures are a living project that improves over time as more coral reefs form around the extensive artwork.
