Cozumel has become one of the most popular destinations in the Mexican Caribbean for Canadian travelers as Air Canada launches a new summer route to the island destination.
Air Canada is one of several airlines operating non-stop flights to Cozumel, which has frequently been ranked as one of the top island destinations in North America. Here’s the latest on Air Canada’s newest international flight.
Cozumel Gains Popularity Amid New Direct Routes
Last October, several North American airlines, including Air Canada and American Airlines, launched new flights to Cozumel amid growing travel demand. Now, Air Canada has further expanded its scheduled flights to the sunny island with the launching of a new Montreal-Cozumel flight.
The new non-stop flight, which began operating on May 9, will be available until August 8, coinciding with the peak of passenger demand.
Canadian travelers will now have more options when it comes to reaching this paradise-like island, as Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport is one of the largest in the country and a major Quebec hub.
Air Canada will operate the flight once per week on Tuesday with its Airbus A319, which has a capacity for up to 156 passengers, meaning the airline could significantly boost Canadian travel to Cozumel.
The total flight duration is around 4 hours and 35 minutes, significantly less compared to before when Montreal travelers would have had to connect via Toronto or other airports.

Tickets are currently on sale for the summer vacation period, which is one of the best times to enjoy Cozumel’s spectacular warm weather.
A return trip in economy class will set Canadian travelers back around $952 CAD in May, although travelers can purchase a return flight in June for as little as $525 CAD.
Launching the new direct international route is great news for Cozumel and the Mexican Caribbean, with state governor Mara Lezama taking to social media to celebrate the landmark flight. “More and more routes are being opened to Quintana Roo,” the regional executive said in a social media post, highlighting the region’s continued appeal for large airlines.
Air Canada is Canada’s flag carrier and largest airline, operating a range of domestic and international flights. The airline has made great strides in opening up new connections to the Mexican Caribbean, and Canadians make up the second-largest market for inbound tourism after Americans.
Cozumel International Airport Projecting Record-Breaking Year For Travel
Officials are expecting the busiest year on record for air travel to Cozumel in 2023. The small island has worked hard to convince airlines to open new routes to the popular destination, which may become Mexico’s newest Magical Town later this year.
In 2022, the airport welcomed over 666,000 passengers, a significant increase which is expected to further grow this year as more flights are added.
Cozumel is especially popular during the summer, when travelers flock to the island’s white-sand beaches, and the island is considered one of the top destinations globally for snorkeling and diving.

Cozumel’s airport is located on the outskirts of San Miguel de Cozumel, the largest city on the island. Compared to Cancun International Airport, Cozumel offers a comfortable travel experience with fewer queues and waiting times.
U.S. travelers can already fly non-stop to Cozumel for several large airports, including Houston and Charlotte, with Southwest and American Airlines operating an extensive network of non-stop flights to the Caribbean hotspot.
