The idyllic collection of beaches, rainforests and ancient temple ruins is once again proving impossible to resist for travelers both in Mexico and around the world, and looks well on its way towards breaking traveler arrivals records once more after setting a new record just last year.

With sizeable amounts of travelers filtering into the region by airplane, cruise ship and on the road, the Mexican Caribbean is once again the place to be in Mexico regardless of how your choose to vacation.

Here’s a look at just how popular the Mexican Caribbean has been so far this year, how other popular parts of the country compare to it and why so many travelers are lured in by its charms year after year.

Mexican Caribbean Is Number One

Last year was a year like no other for the Mexican Caribbean. “Revenge travel” was in full flow and, as a result, tourists were keen to make up for lost time and keep traveling whenever they could.

One place that proved to be a hit with the global traveling masses was the Mexican Caribbean, as last year record-breaking numbers of travelers descended upon the region to sample all that it had to offer – and they haven’t grown bored of it yet.

The region, which includes famous towns and cities such as Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, Tulum, and many more, has established itself as the most visited destination in Mexico so far this year, with its arrivals figures far surpassing those of its nearest rivals.

In total, some 2.5 million international travelers flew into Cancun’s airport between January and March.

Not only is this an extremely high figure that highlights the popularity of the region, but it is more than double the number of travelers that the city’s closest competitor welcomed.

The second most popular destination in the country was Mexico’s capital and largest city, Mexico City, which saw some 1.1 million foreign arrivals passing through its international airport.

Even further behind, in third place, was another beautiful beach destination, Los Cabos in Baja California Sur. The scenic city’s airport saw just 670,000 foreign tourists arrive between January and March, further proving just how popular the Mexican Caribbean is with travelers around the world.

Not only is the Mexican Caribbean the most popular destination in the country, but it is looking like it could be more popular than ever before.

Despite last year being a record-breaking one in terms of traveler numbers in the region, between January and March this year, the numbers were even higher than the same period in 2022, with 4.9% more travelers flying into Cancun’s international airport.

Cruise passenger totals are also higher this year, with 3% more cruises sailing into Cozumel and 29% more passengers visiting.

It doesn’t take a genius to see why so many are continuing to choose the Mexican Caribbean as a vacation destination.

In Cancun, travelers have a plethora of top-quality resorts and hotels to choose from, not to mention some of the most beautiful beaches, bars, restaurants and a fantastic nightlife scene to keep them busy. Not only this, but the region is also a cultural hotspot, with numerous historic temples, museums and galleries to satisfy any traveler’s cultural yearnings.

By the end of the year, the Mexican Caribbean could be even more appealing still.

Work is well underway on the landmark Maya Train development, a tourist attraction that will see connectivity between the region’s must-see places and temple grounds further interconnected, whilst the development of Tulum Airport – also expected to be ready by the end of the year – could woo even more travelers to the region.

While we don’t know for certain just yet, there’s every chance that the region breaks last year’s traveler number records this year, as even more travelers find themselves charmed by this stunning part of the world.
