Each year, countless travelers opt for a rental car for their Mexican Caribbean getaway.
At a time when public transport options remain limited, rental vehicles offer travelers the flexibility to discover sights off the beaten path.
And while driving in Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean is generally safe, accidents do happen, and a new report now shows that one stretch of highway in the sun-soaked region is among the most dangerous in Mexico.
The main regional highway that connects Cancun to Tulum is officially the most perilous for drivers in the Mexican Caribbean, with several hundred fatal accidents recorded in the last year alone.
As more travelers flock to the Mexican Caribbean this year, here’s the latest on road safety in the sun-drenched region and what travelers can do to stay safe.
New Study Reveals The Most Common Causes Of Road Accidents
Car rentals are surging in popularity this year as more travelers opt for a rental vehicle instead of relying on private bus companies or costly excursions. Offering a host of benefits – greater flexibility, lower costs, and access to hidden attractions – car rentals are a great way to get around the Mexican Caribbean state of Quintana Roo.
But renting a car also has some notable risks. Unfortunately, serious car accidents remain a major issue in the Mexican Caribbean despite general improvements to road safety in recent years.

Last week, Mexico’s transportation and telecommunications ministry published new statistics on road safety across the country. The report shows that the Cancun-Tulum highway is one of the most dangerous for drivers in Mexico. Over 400 people have lost their lives in car accidents on the over 800-kilometre-long highway in the past year.
Since 2021, the number of accidents on the highly transited highway has skyrocketed amid the ongoing construction of the Maya Train, which has caused significant interruptions to traffic and drivers.

The new report also sheds light on the main reasons behind fatal road accidents. Nearly 80% of fatal accidents were caused by speeding and distracted drivers – such as those using a mobile device while driving.
Quintana Roo’s Carretera Federal 307 connects a number of populated locations, including Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Chetumal. Not only is the popular highway used by private drivers, but also trucks, buses, and taxis.

Fortunately, the highway is considered to be of good quality, and most drivers can look forward to a safe and comfortable journey as long as they adhere to important safety regulations.
Follow These Tips When Driving In The Mexican Caribbean
Renting a car in Cancun is a great way to travel with freedom, especially for more experienced drivers. However, it’s important to follow some critical safety tips when driving in the touristy region.

Travelers should choose a reputable and trustworthy rental company. Opt for major international brands like Hertz, which allow travelers to check prices online and book a car in advance.
Be sure to familiarize yourself with driving conditions & regulations before opting for a rental. Conditions can vary wildly from one location to the next, so it’s a good idea to opt for destinations with excellent roads & safety conditions. Avoid venturing into rural areas or neighborhoods outside of resort areas, as they may have higher crime rates.

Travelers are also advised to maintain high situational awareness at all times and to avoid driving at night when the risk of theft and assault is higher. The completion of the new Maya Train will make it easier and more convenient than ever to explore the Mexican Caribbean.
