Cancun & Mexican Caribbean Destinations To Implement Transfer Stations To And From The Maya Train

Last Updated

While some sections of the Maya Train are already operating, we are still a few months away from all routes being open to tourists.

With the Train just months away from operating at full capacity in Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean, officials in the sunny region are now working on building transfer stations to improve mobility.

While the Maya Train will be able to transport thousands of travelers per day, many of its train stations are located outside of busy city centers, causing confusion for travelers and residents alike on how to reach the railway system.

But that’s set to change with the implementation of new measures to make reaching Maya Train stations easier in places like Cancun and other resort hotspots.

With that in mind, here’s a look at what the latest transportation measures mean for travelers in Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean.

Cancun Government Steps Up Efforts To Improve Access To Maya Train Stations

There are huge expectations for the new Maya Train railway system, which is due to begin operating at full capacity this summer.

Last week, officials inaugurated the new section between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, and although tickets aren’t on sale yet, travelers are already awaiting the new service.

While expectations may be high, there remain a number of concerns with regard to reaching Maya Train stations from resort hotspots like Cancun. Although Playa del Carmen’s Maya Train station is open, there are currently no accessible public transport options to reach the new station, garnering criticism from local travel businesses.

But that’s set to change thanks to an announcement by Mara Lezama, the state governor of Quintana Roo, who revealed that authorities are working on new ways to transport passengers to and from the region’s main train stations.

While some Maya Train stations, including the one next to Cancun International Airport, offer free shuttle busses, others lack comprehensive public transit options.

Without proper means to reach the stations, travelers might be forced to rely on expensive taxis or private transfers.

Cancun Tourists Will Soon Have Another Option Besides Uber While Traveling

According to the state governor, several projects are already underway to launch bus connections to some of the region’s most important new Maya Train stations.

Although officials are yet to unveil a clear timeline regarding the launch of these new connections, they are expected to enter service sometime between late spring and early summer.

In Cancun, two new transit hubs will be launched, allowing residents and travelers to reach the city’s Maya Train station. One will be located in the Las Américas square, while the other one will be built in the intersection between the Kabah and Lopez Portillo avenues.

Cancun To Playa del Carmen Maya Train Route Officially Inaugurated

Last week, Mexico’s president Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador took part in an inaugural ceremony to celebrate the launching of the new Cancun – Playa del Carmen section of the Maya Train.

For now, the new route is operating on a restricted basis, with tickets for the promising connection expected to go on sale in the near future. Travelers can keep an on the official Maya Train website for the latest updates on ticket availability.

Despite issues with poor maintenance and a growing number of delays, the Maya Train has already carried tens of thousands of travelers, with the Cacncun Palenque route already operating for over a month.

With the busy summer season approaching, travel numbers will only continue to rise, especially as new efforts to improve traveler mobility improve access to the state-of-the-art railway system.

The Maya Train will help bolster arrival figures for the Mexican Caribbean, with southern hotspots like Tulum set to benefit massively from the multi-billion-dollar project.
