The presence of street vendors in Mexican vacation destinations like Cancun is something that many tourists look forward to while on vacation.
They sell souvenirs, food, beverages, and even some services to tourists, but there are two issues that Cancun is facing when it comes to vendors.
One is that many do not have the proper permits, and the other is that they often work in areas they’re not supposed to be in.
To address these issues, a crackdown has begun in Cancun to keep vendors off tourist beaches.
Why Cancun Is Cracking Down On Vendors On It’s Beaches
Much of the problem with vendors on the beaches in Cancun has to do with illegal beach vending.
Vendors who are allowed to work on the beaches are required to be registered and have a permit to do so.
Unfortunately, many of them do not, and the beaches are becoming overrun with vendors that may or may not be legal.
How Officials Are Addressing The Problem
According to officials, an operation is being launched that will prevent unauthorized vendors from being on the beaches in Cancun.
At the entrances to the beaches, they will have inspectors to stop vendors from entering beach areas.
They will also have officials touring the beaches to look for vendors that do make it on the beach, but rather than arrest vendors, they will ask them to leave and urge them to obtain the proper permits.
Cancun Beaches With The Most Vendors
Several of Cancun’s most popular beaches are where most vendors are operating.
Particularly beaches in the Hotel Zone, which is the main tourist hotspot, are where you’ll find the most vendors.
The beaches at which these operations are being launched are:
- Playa Langosta
- Playa Gaviota Azul
- Playa Chac Mool
- Playa Delfines
- Playa San Miguelito
Beach Vendor Safety Issues
The biggest problem with unpermitted vendors on the beaches in Cancun is that there are so many of them that officials feel they’re affecting the tourist experience.
There are also safety issues to consider, though.
Although rare, criminals can pose as beach vendors, and it would be hard to tell the difference, which puts beachgoers at risk of being robbed or worse.
It’s also a known fact that many “beach vendors” in Cancun also sell illegal items to tourists as well.
What Tourists Think About Beach Vendors
Some tourists love having access to beach vendors when visiting Cancun.
They see it as locals just trying to make a living, and they enjoy being able to buy souvenirs and other items without leaving the beach.
Others are annoyed with being approached by vendors, especially those who are more aggressive at trying to sell their wares.
Beaches In Cancun With Fewer Vendors
There are a couple of beaches in Cancun with fewer beach vendors.
Playa Mujeres, which is located north of the Hotel Zone, has more secluded beaches.
Additionally, just past Playa Mujeres, in Costa Mujeres, you’ll find Isla Blanca, which is one of the most peaceful, secluded beaches in Cancun.
If you’re looking for a quieter, more relaxing beach experience, this is the place to go.
Where To Go In Cancun For The Best Street Vendor Experience
If you really want an authentic street vendor experience while visiting Cancun, then you can visit Parque las Palapas in the downtown area.
Here, you’ll find vendors offering street food and other items for sale from stalls set up in a nice park.
At night the park comes alive, with the addition of musical performances and other entertainment, and it makes for a great way to spend an evening during your Cancun vacation.
