Summer in Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean is heating up, at least in terms of bookings for hotels & resorts in the region, which have skyrocketed as the busy holiday period kicks off.
According to the latest figures, up to 60% of all rooms in the region are already sold out, with that number rising to nearly 80% in hotspots like Cancun or Isla Mujeres.
And with travelers increasingly booking well in advance, it’s likely that by late July, only a handful of rooms will be available for short-term bookings in Cancun’s booming resort zone or nearby Playa del Carmen.
With that in mind, here’s the latest traveler booking trends for the summer in Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean.
Cancun Bookings Up As Travelers Seek Sun, Beach, And Luxury Hospitality
New findings from PriceTravel Holding, a Mexico-based hospitality sales firm, show that bookings for sunny beach destinations are skyrocketing ahead of the summer season.
And with its quaint white-sand shore, top-rated all-inclusives, and balmy summer weather, Cancun fits the bill as a leading resort destination, a reputation it has effortlessly maintained for decades.
Despite alarm over the 2024 hurricane season – which is expected to be unusually active – Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean are convincing travelers that the region is welcoming, safe, and fun for the whole family.
That’s evidenced by booking numbers, which have grown in beach and sun hotspots, most notably Cancun and the Riviera Maya, which hold the vast majority of all hotel rooms in the Mexican Caribbean.
With just a week to go before the official start of the summer season, undecided travelers are being urged to book as soon as possible to secure the best rate & room type, especially if they are considering traveling to busy hotspots like Cancun.
But outside of the crown jewel of the Mexican Caribbean, other smaller destinations are also gearing up to welcome more travelers. Tulum is expected to see a major travel surge this summer following the opening of the city’s new international airport, which already operates several flights from the US, including from New York.
For travelers seeking peace of mind, many of the smaller resort towns near Cancun offer quiet beaches & stunning accommodations, including in Akumal and Bacalar, which are some of the hottest destinations for eco-travel in 2024.
Meanwhile, a new study from the World Travel & Tourism Council reveals that travelers are increasingly keen on shorter stays on their Mexican Caribbean getaway.
This summer, travelers are expected to spend an average of 6 nights exploring the sun-soaked destination, one night less than last year.
As a result, visitors are more keen to add more items to their Mexican Caribbean itinerary, including excursions, day trips, and cultural experiences.
And with interest in Mayan culture & history skyrocketing ahead of the launching of the Maya Train, the Mexican Caribbean stands out as a top-tier destination to explore historical & cultural treasures.
More destinations are now available for travelers to reach from Cancun via the railway system; from the gorgeous Mayan ruins in Chichen Itzá to nearby hotspots in Yucatán, train travel makes it easier than ever to discover the region beyond Cancun.
Later this year, the Maya Train will also connect Cancun with Tulum, bridging the huge 130-kilometer gap that currently separates the two hotspots.
Despite initially facing challenges, the multi-billion railway project is already transporting thousands of monthly travelers throughout the Mexican Caribbean, with more passenger growth expected later this year.
