Many travelers who visit Cancun don’t prefer taxis over other forms of transportation for several reasons.
Aside from the usual complaints, the ongoing battle with Uber drivers and the “monopoly mentality” scares people away.
Fortunately, there are plenty of other options, and we’ll discuss the top Cancun transport alternatives as four main complaints drive passengers away from taxis.
First, let’s take a look at those complaints.
Top 4 Complaints About Cancun Taxi Drivers
There are four main complaints that around 90 percent of taxi users have about taxis in Cancun.
Three of these complaints have to do with the conditions of the drivers and the vehicles that they drive.
The other complaint has to do with the cost of taking a taxi in Cancun.
The complaints that have to do with the taxis and drivers themselves are that the air conditioners rarely work, the vehicles are old and dirty, and the drivers are rude and unprofessional.
The other big complaint about Cancun taxis is that the rates are too high.
This isn’t surprising considering that you’ll typically be charged $70 or more just to get from the airport to the Hotel Zone.
The following alternatives may be a better option when you’re visiting Cancun.
The Most Affordable Transport Option
The most affordable alternative to taking a taxi in Cancun is using the ADO bus service.
It only costs a few bucks, and there is an ADO bus station right at Cancun Airport.
The only thing is, two catches come with taking the ADO bus.
One catch regarding the ADO bus is that it will only take you to the station in downtown Cancun.
From there you’ll have to get a taxi or another bus to go the rest of the distance to your hotel, which will likely be in the Hotel Zone.
The other catch is that the buses only take off from the airport every 30-45 minutes, so it’s not as convenient as some other options.
Taking A Shuttle From Cancun Airport
In addition to the bus option, there are also shared and private shuttles that can take you from the airport to your hotel after arriving in Cancun.
A shared shuttle can be as little as $25 each way, whereas a private shuttle will be at least double that, which is still less than a taxi, and more comfortable.
Shuttle services can be booked directly or through third-party vendors like Viator.
Private Transportation In Cancun
Private transportation is another option you have when visiting Cancun, and it’s one of the most popular alternatives to taking a taxi.
It’ll cost more than a taxi, but it’s the most comfortable because you’ll have a private car or suburban-type vehicle all to yourself.
For many it’s worth paying in the $100 range for that extra level of comfort, as well as the convenience of being able to stop off at a store for supplies if necessary.
Private transportation can also be booked directly or through a third-party seller.
Why You Should Book Your Transportation In Advance
Both shuttles and private transportation can be booked in advance and there are two great reasons to do this.
One is that you’ll know exactly what you’re paying for your transportation, so there won’t be any surprises when you arrive at the airport.
The other great reason to book your airport transportation in advance is the fact that you will have your driver right there waiting for you when you arrive.
They’ll typically carry a sign with your name on it, so you can walk out of Cancun Airport, hop in the vehicle, and be on your way to starting your Cancun dream vacation.
