A lot of travelers who visit Cancun opt for an all-inclusive with multiple dining options that are included with the stay, but many still want to take the opportunity to try some sort of street food while visiting too.
It’s a timeless and authentic experience that brings tourists closer to Mexican culture, but there are hidden dangers that you have to be careful to avoid.
This is why Cancun tourists are being warned to watch out for illegal street food vendors when visiting the destination
Illegal Street Food Vendors In Cancun
According to a recent report, 40 or more street food stalls are operating illegally in Cancun.
This means that they have not obtained the proper permits and, therefore, have not undergone the usual health and safety inspections that legally operating vendors must undergo.
These illegal street food stalls should be avoided if at all possible.
What To Watch Out For
Although it’s not easy to tell a legal street food stall from an illegal one, there are a few things to watch out for.
One thing to look for is the cleanliness of the food stall and the vendor. Another is what safety precautions the vendor is taking when handling food.
The pricing of food items can also signal an illegal vendor, as lower prices can mean subpar ingredients.
Some type of sufficient refrigeration should also be used to keep food at safe temperatures.
Additionally, cooked food should be properly stored as well.
If any of these things are lacking, it would be wise to choose another vendor.
Ordering Food Delivery In Cancun
In addition to being careful when visiting street food stalls, you must also be careful when ordering food for delivery in Cancun.
This is because, according to restaurant industry officials, some of the illegal street food vendors are available on digital food delivery platforms.
As many as 20 percent of the illegal “restaurants” do this.
The Dangers Of Eating At An Illegal Street Food Stall
It’s common knowledge that food that isn’t handled or stored correctly can be dangerous.
When a vendor isn’t vetted by health officials, it’s impossible to know if they’re doing these things correctly.
If they’re not, and bacteria, cross-contamination, or spoiled food becomes an issue, foodborne illnesses are more likely to occur.
Such illnesses can make you very sick, and that’s the last thing you want to deal with when visiting a country far from home.
What Kind Of Street Food Will You Find In Cancun?
All kinds of food items are available from street vendors in Cancun, from traditional Mexican staples to items you’re more likely to find in American vacation destinations.
You’ll have no trouble finding things like tacos, tamales, elote, quesadillas, and carnitas, but you’ll also see vendors offering things like pizza, burgers, and seafood as well.
Any of these items can be dangerous if not handled properly.
The Safest Way To Enjoy Traditional Mexican Food In Cancun
Street food vendors are not the only way to enjoy traditional Mexican dishes in Cancun.
There are plenty of legal, authentic Mexican restaurants in Cancun that offer the same types of dishes.
The prices might be a bit higher, but the quality will likely be better.
If you really want that authentic street food experience, though, be sure to look for vendors that other people are visiting. You can even ask locals what their go-tos are just to be on the safe side.
