If you are packing your bags for the Mexican Caribbean right now, get ready for a high-energy start to your vacation.
It is official: the Riviera Maya is absolutely buzzing. Just today, Monday, May 11, Cancun International Airport (CUN) clocked a staggering 410 scheduled flights. We are talking 205 arrivals and 205 departures in a single 24-hour window, connecting paradise to 48 international cities and 17 domestic hubs.
While it is incredibly exciting to see the destination thriving, navigating an airport handling that massive volume of metal and passengers requires a solid game plan.
Grab your boarding pass, because here are 5 things you absolutely need to be prepared for when flying into Cancun this season!

1️⃣ The Arrivals Area Will Be A “Shark Tank”
When 205 flights land in a single day, the arrivals terminal turns into a chaotic sea of people.
Once you clear customs and grab your suitcase, you have to walk through the infamous “shark tank“—the hallway where dozens of timeshare vendors and unofficial taxi drivers will aggressively try to flag you down.
The Hack: Do not stop walking, keep your eyes forward, and pre-book your private airport transfer before you even leave home. Having a driver waiting outside with your name on a sign is the ultimate stress-reliever when 10,000 other tourists are all trying to hail a cab at the exact same time.

2️⃣ You Must Double-Check Your Terminal
With 29 different airlines currently operating out of Cancun—ranging from British Airways and Turkish Airlines to Volaris and Delta—the airport is operating at maximum capacity across its four distinct terminals.
Cancun’s terminals are incredibly spread out, and walking between them is simply not an option.
If you tell your driver the wrong airline and get dropped off at Terminal 2 instead of Terminal 4, you have to wait for an inter-terminal shuttle bus, which could easily cost you 30 to 45 minutes and put your flight home at risk. Always double-check your terminal on your airline app before you arrive!

3️⃣ Baggage Rules Are Getting Stricter
With over 400 daily flights running at peak capacity, overhead bin space is going to be incredibly tight. Airline gate agents are actively cracking down on oversized carry-on bags and personal items.
Furthermore, the era of budget-friendly luggage is rapidly fading across the entire aviation industry. Even Southwest bags no longer fly free, so you can expect almost every major carrier to charge a premium at the check-in desk.
The Fix: Always pay for your checked bags and heavy carry-ons online at least 24 hours before your flight to lock in the lowest price and avoid a massive upcharge at the counter.

4️⃣ Prepare For A Totally Global Vibe
You aren’t just flying in with other Americans and Canadians! Today’s flight data shows direct arrivals coming in from Paris, London, Madrid, Istanbul, Amsterdam, Bogotá, and Panama.
Cancun is a massive global melting pot right now. Expect the duty-free shops and airport lounges to be packed with a highly international crowd, which makes for some incredible people-watching while you wait for your boarding zone to be called.

5️⃣ The “Three-Hour Rule” Is Not A Suggestion
When it is time to head home and trade your swimsuit for sweatpants, do not push your luck with the clock.
With 205 departing flights taking off today alone, the check-in counters and security checkpoints are going to experience massive surges in traffic.
While the new Nichupté Bridge is making the drive from the Hotel Zone significantly faster, you still need to be walking through the terminal doors a minimum of three hours before your international flight.
