We have flown into Cancun International Airport (CUN) hundreds of times. While it is the ultimate gateway to the Mexican Caribbean, the arrival experience can be incredibly chaotic if you do not know exactly what to expect.
The airport is notorious for aggressive salespeople, inflated prices, and transportation scams targeting exhausted travelers right as they step off the plane.
To ensure your vacation starts smoothly and you keep your money safe, here are the 4 biggest costly mistakes to avoid the minute you land.
1. Stopping in the “Shark Tank”

The Trap: After clearing immigration and customs, you must walk through a long hallway before reaching the exit. This area is packed with official-looking people in uniforms calling out to offer “help” finding your driver. Welcome to the Shark Tank.
The Reality: These are not airport staff. They are aggressive timeshare and vacation club salespeople trying to rope you into high-pressure presentations.
The Fix:
- Do not stop walking.
- Avoid eye contact, politely say “No, gracias,” and walk straight out the sliding glass doors to the outside terminal.
2. Failing to Pre-Book Your Transportation

The Trap: Walking outside without a ride and trying to hail a cab on the spot.
The Reality: There are no regulated taxi meters at the airport (though they are in the works). You will be hit with “surge” pricing ranging from $60 to over $200 USD just to get to the Hotel Zone. Worse, hopping into pirate taxis or unregulated vehicles presents a massive personal safety risk.
The Fix:
- Always pre-book a private shuttle or shared transfer before you leave home.
- Reputable companies offer fixed pricing, track your flight, and greet you with a name sign.
3. Falling for the “Your Driver Left” Scam

The Trap: Once outside, touts wearing “Official Information” badges will ask who you booked your ride with. They will pretend to check a radio, then claim your driver already left because your flight was delayed.
The Reality: It is a classic scam. They want to panic you into paying for one of their overpriced taxis, promising your original company will refund you later (they will not).
The Fix:
- Ignore the touts completely.
- Legitimate transfer companies will never send a representative to chase you down.
- Walk past the crowds directly to the designated greeting area and look for the person holding a sign with your name or your company’s logo.
4. Exchanging Money or Buying Snacks at the Terminal

The Trap: Grabbing a bottle of water or exchanging U.S. dollars for Mexican Pesos at the kiosks right before the exit.
The Reality: The exchange booths inside the arrival terminals offer the absolute worst rates in the country—you will instantly lose 15% to 20% of your money’s value. Convenience store snacks are similarly gouged, with basic water bottles regularly priced at $8 to $10 USD.
The Fix:
- Bring an empty reusable water bottle through security at home and fill it before your flight, or pack a few carry-on snacks.
- Wait until you are safely checked into your resort to withdraw pesos from a legitimate bank ATM at the actual daily exchange rate.
