Isla Mujeres is widely celebrated as one of the most idyllic, laid-back, and incredibly safe destinations in the Mexican Caribbean. The tiny, colorful island located just off the coast of Cancun is famous for its golf cart culture, quiet beaches, and generally flawless security record. However, local authorities recently had to jump into action when a group of criminals began specifically targeting tourists for petty theft.

Travelers enjoying the normally pristine beaches were surprised by a sudden string of robberies, including a high-profile theft where a tourist’s backpack containing over $2,000 in cash was stolen. Fortunately, local police moved incredibly fast. They launched a targeted operation, utilized local surveillance networks, and quickly tracked down the criminals. If you are planning a trip to Isla Mujeres this winter, here is what you need to know about the arrests, the current crime rate, and the overall safety of the island.

The Operation And Arrests
Cristian Linares Gómez, the head of the Secretariat of Citizen Security for Isla Mujeres, recently addressed the situation after several individuals were arrested for the beach robberies. According to the suspects’ own statements during their arrest, they do not actually reside on the island; they claim their primary residence is in Cancun.
Linares Gómez indicated that these individuals were allegedly boarding the passenger ferries, crossing the bay from Cancun specifically to steal belongings from unsuspecting tourists enjoying the sand, and then attempting to return to the mainland.

Thanks to an extensive network of surveillance cameras placed around the tourist areas, police were able to quickly identify the suspects involved in the major backpack robbery. Authorities successfully recovered the entire $2,000 in cash and returned it directly to the rightful owner. The detainees have now been placed at the disposal of the State Attorney General’s Office for full criminal investigations.
A Consistently Low Crime Rate
While the news of beach theft might sound alarming, the reality on the ground remains incredibly positive. Linares Gómez firmly maintained that the overall crime rate on Isla Mujeres remains extremely low, and he actively denied any widespread increase in robberies across the municipality.

He pointed to specific metrics to back up the safety claims, noting that the island area currently has absolutely zero reports of vehicle theft. The mainland zone of the municipality only sees an average of two stolen motorcycles per week. The rapid police response to the backpack incident clearly proves that local authorities are refusing to let petty theft go unnoticed, and they are working tirelessly to ensure their prime tourism hotspots remain pristine.
Official Safety Ratings
If you are still feeling a bit nervous about heading to the Mexican Caribbean, looking at the official government context is incredibly helpful. The United States State Department currently assigns Quintana Roo—the Mexican state that is home to Cancun, Tulum, and Isla Mujeres—a Level 2 travel advisory.

While a federal travel advisory sounds intimidating, it is completely standard for international travel. A Level 2 simply advises tourists to “Exercise Increased Caution” and maintain standard situational awareness. For perspective, this is the exact same safety rating that the State Department currently assigns to incredibly popular European tourism hotspots, including the United Kingdom and Spain.
Overall, Isla Mujeres remains a brilliantly secure destination. As long as you use common sense—like not leaving large amounts of cash unattended on your beach towel while you swim—you can expect a flawlessly safe and completely relaxing island vacation.
