Major Sporting Events Could Be Added To The Cancun Calendar
Some of the world’s greatest sporting events may be headed Cancun’s way in the coming months and years. Formula One and the NBA both have plans to stage events in the popular tourist spot.
As Cancun continues to build on its massive success over the course of the pandemic, tourists can look forward to even more reasons to plan a trip to the Mexican Caribbean. The possibility of major events like this being staged in Cancun also opens the region up to a brand new market that may not have considered visiting before.
The arrival of Formula One represents the biggest opportunity for the Mexican Caribbean. Despite the government dropping funding for the bulk of the new sports projects, a new brand racetrack could break ground in the coming weeks.
It was announced back in November that plans to begin construction were confirmed for the end of February and although no new developments have been made clear, one of the main faces in Formula 1 was spotted visiting Cancun in the past few weeks, sparking rumors of work starting.
The plans for the track are extremely impressive and offer a multifaceted experience that will go far beyond one yearly race. The complex is expected to host the track itself, two five-diamond 120 room hotels, a golf course, and enough space to hold concerts and other events. Add these exciting prospects to the scenario and Cancun will enjoy much more than one high spending weekend.
Formula One, unlike the American NASCAR, has a truly global audience, meaning the potential to pull visitors from even further afoot grows significantly. Not to mention no sponsorships and other added benefits for local hotels and restaurants who can benefit from an average of four people for every traveling group for sports events.
It’s also hoped that the racetrack will have a direct connection with the planned Maya Train system. The railway is slated to be completely functional by the end of 2023 and represents a huge opportunity for tourists to explore this corner of Mexico in its entirety without the use of a tour group.
The NFL has been in Mexico before, as there is a fast-growing market for the sport. Currently, a three-game deal has been agreed upon for the next few seasons, although Cancun is not being used for these at the moment.
The NBA however looks like it may be returning. Although not verified yet, there is hope that Cancun may host several games over the coming seasons, adding yet another perk for tourists in the region to enjoy.
Although much can change, adding high-end sporting events to the Cancun calendar does nothing but help support the growing tourist market in Quintana Roo. The prospect of a week-long package trip where racing enthusiasts can see a Mexican Grand Prix, hit the beach, and check out some Mayan ruins all in a few days is wonderful and adds to the strength of the destination.
As the state as a whole fights other concerns like organized crime, petty theft, and sargassum influxes, the more top tier attractions will bolster tourist confidence. It still remains to be seen whether they will all come to fruition, and any further reports concerning the breaking ground on the racetrack will be reported as soon as possible.
Those hoping to travel to Cancun soon should keep on top of any changes in the restrictions as they can change quickly. The current traffic light zone is green, but an uptick in COVID cases may lower the level to yellow.
