The New Green Zone Allows Maximum Capacity For Resort Town
Playa del Carmen is expecting excellent figures over the Easter break, with hotel capacity potentially reaching 100%. The statement comes as Quintana Roo moves into the green zone for the first time in several weeks.
The popular resort town just south of Cancun has already clocked up 80% capacity for the typically busy week. Americans generally represent a massive chunk of the Easter numbers as kids get some time off school, and at the very least the adults get a long weekend.
The news will be welcomed by the town which, along with the other major hotspots in Quintana Roo, has been dealing with the ramifications of the Omicron wave and major weather disruption.
January saw skyrocketing COVID numbers after an immensely successful Christmas and New Year for the region. With hotel and restaurant staff cut by as much as half, and then new restrictions brought in to combat the spread, it was a tough few weeks. The situation was compounded by not one but four major winter storms in the US that saw thousands of planes grounded.
The past few weeks have seen the levels on Mexico’s epidemiological traffic light system gradually lowered until this week when the state finally hit green once more. The decision means that all restrictions have been lifted from Quintana Roo and hotels are once again able to function at 100% capacity. Which is exactly what Playa del Carmen is approaching in the next busy window.
In what has been a turbulent week, it will be a relief for money that tourists seem unfazed by recent events. Just days ago, two men were shot and killed in a popular beach restaurant in Tulum. It’s the latest in a string of high-profile violent incidents perpetrated by people associated with organized crime.
Tourists are statistically still very safe in Quintana Roo, but the shocking nature of these incidents garners a reputation for the area thanks to major news outlet headlines. Luckily, most tourists appear to be keeping the events in context and are not being scared out of their vacations.
The real test for the region will come when the global tourism industry has returned to something similar to pre-pandemic times. When other options become available, it is possible that the worry over such events could force a different decision. But for the moment, Mexico remains one of the easiest, if not the easiest, countries to visit in the world.
Visitors are not required to be vaccinated, nor is a test of any kind required. The only barrier to travel would come from the traveler’s home country who may require one of these. The US for example still requires a negative COVID test no more than one day before their return to the States.
Many hotels are helping with this by including COVID tests in their room prices or providing them for a fee at the end of the trip.
Regardless, those travels hoping to book a trip during easter may need to move quickly if Playa Del Carmen is the desired destination. With rooms filling up so quickly, some of the top hotels may be fully booked and prices may be rising. Travelers should get in touch with any hotels they are interested in and reserve their room as soon as possible.
The same advice goes for any tours, excursions, activities, and even restaurant bookings. To avoid disappointment, plan well ahead. Easter is not until April, but waiting until then may be too late.
