There will be a cold front moving through Cancun this weekend that is going to bring rain and cold temperatures. According to the Mexico National Meteorological Service, the cold spell began yesterday, as the front moved over the Gulf of Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula. Throughout the presence of the cold front, extremely heavy rains are possible, along with significant lightning and maybe even hail at some times.
The cold front, which moved across much of Mexico prior to reaching the Riviera Maya and the Cancun area, also has the potential to cause high waves along the Yucatan Peninsula. This is not good news for those that will be traveling to or spending time at Cancun’s beautiful beaches this weekend for the beginning of the Easter holiday. The good news for the tourists is that the bad weather will not be sticking around for too long.
Cancun has been preparing for a massive number of tourists for the holiday season, which begins this Sunday April 10th and lasts for the next couple of weeks. Predictions in the number of tourists that will visit the area have been as high as 3 million. It’s likely that the weather will do little to hurt those numbers expected throughout the holiday. Fortunately, for those looking to get out of the colder temperatures that are still hanging around in the United States and Canada, the warm weather will return soon after the cold front moves out.
Prior to this front moving in, which is referred to as cold front 41, the Riviera Maya area has been seeing some very warm temperatures. Last week in Cancun temperatures reached over 90 degrees and at some times even higher. During that time there was also an increase in the amount of sargassum that washed up on the shores of many of the area’s beaches.
It is common to see an increase in sargassum as the warm weather begins to arrive in the Riviera Maya, but this year it has created more of a problem than usual. So much of the seaweed has washed up on the shores of some beaches that barriers have had to be installed. Mexico’s Navy has even aided in collecting it before it reaches the shores and locals have been asked to help in keeping the beaches clean. This has been a worry in regards to the upcoming busy weeks but so far it doesn’t seem to be hurting tourism and a little change in the weather likely will not either.
While the cold front should keep temperatures from going as high as they were last week after it moves out, we will still see the warm weather return but in a milder form. Friday’s temperature was a mild 76-78 degrees Fahrenheit and the rest of the weekend it will hover around 80. After that we will start to see the temperature climb closer and closer to 90 degrees again.
In Cancun the average temperature year-round is generally between 85-90 degrees so this little dip in temperature is not a common occurrence. September and October are generally thought of as the rainy months so the arrival of the rain is fairly uncommon as well.
Regardless of what the weather looks like this weekend, it is the weather and the spectacular beaches that draw so many tourists to Cancun year after year. It is also why so many of those tourists make the decision after visiting to call the Riviera Maya area home.
