Bad Smells & More: Top Tourist Complaints In Cancun Right Now

Cancun is undoubtedly a beautiful beach vacation destination, known for its white sands and aqua-blue waters, but no place is perfect and visitors do have some complaints.

The famous Hotel Zone is the most important area for tourists, but according to some, it’s being neglected, and it’s noticeable.

Bad smells, deteriorating sidewalks, and abandoned areas are some of the top tourist complaints in Cancun right now.

The Issues

According to recent reports, some regular visitors to the tropical paradise of Cancun have some complaints about the condition of the Hotel Zone.

They report bad smells from sewage pipes, broken concrete along the roads and walkways, and greenery in the medians being neglected.

Additionally, there have been complaints about abandoned buildings, such as restaurants, in disrepair.

The Cause

Much of the cause, according to hotel and tourism officials, is the lack of trust in taking care of the Hotel Zone.

Previously, this was the responsibility of Fonatur, also known as the National Tourism Promotion Fund.

Now, Fonatur is no longer in charge of the maintenance of the Hotel Zone; the state is, but it’s unclear who exactly will be tasked with maintaining the important tourist area.

What’s Being Done

Meetings are getting underway to determine how Fonatur will be replaced.

The rules, where the resources for maintenance will come from, and what projects need to be prioritized all need to be decided on.

Meetings between hotel officials and state authorities are being held to determine these things and align goals and strategies for achieving them.

Why The Maintenance Of Cancun’s Hotel Zone Is So Important

Cancun’s Hotel Zone is the most important tourist area in the destination.

This is where most of the millions of annual tourists spend most of their time while visiting Cancun.

It’s where most of the luxury all-inclusive resorts are located, where all of the best beaches are, where many of the restaurants are, and the area with the most attractions and activities to enjoy.

Its being in disrepair is not a good image for the destination.

The Future Of The Hotel Zone

Some work is already being done in the Hotel Zone, according to municipal President Ana Paty Peralta.

She commented recently that it will begin with the repaving of about a mile of the Hotel Zone along Kukulcan Boulevard.

According to Peralta, it will start where the damage is the worst in the popular tourist area.

Staying Outside Of The Hotel Zone

If you’re traveling to Cancun and you’re worried that the Hotel Zone isn’t going to be the paradise you expected it to be, you can opt to stay outside of the Hotel Zone.

There are several great hotels in the downtown area, and there’s plenty to do as well.

Additionally, there’s an exclusive area north of the Hotel Zone called Costa Mujeres.

The area has pristine beaches and luxurious hotel properties, and it’s a bit more secluded than the Hotel Zone, too.

Why Millions Of Travelers Still Visit Cancun

Although there are complaints from tourists about some things in Cancun, the majority look past that and still find it to be the idyllic destination travelers know and love.

That’s why the minor problems have not stopped millions of tourists from visiting the destination.

In the future, once these issues are resolved, there’s no doubt Cancun will be even better than ever, and it will continue to be one of the most popular vacation destinations among travelers from around the world.
