Cancun is bolstering beach safety for travelers during the hectic summer travel period with the deployment of more lifeguards to prevent drownings and other swimming risks.

Each summer, over a million visitors flock to Cancun’s white-sand beaches – more numerous than ever this year – in search of sun, sea, and waves.

Although largely safe thanks to new investments and modern life-saving equipment, Cancun’s beaches are not without their risks, with factors like unpredictable weather and reckless behavior leading to several drownings each year.

With thousands of travelers flocking to Cancun’s Blue Flag beaches daily this summer, here’s what Cancun is doing to protect swimmers this summer.

Summer Heat Draws More Travelers To Cancun Beaches Amid Heightened Lifeguard Presence

Cancun’s white-sand beaches are once again proving to be particularly popular with travelers this summer.

With record-shattering arrival figures on the horizon, the city is gearing up for packed beaches & more swimmers.

That’s all the more so as temperatures rise – Cancun is executing highs of up to 110 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cancun’s unprecedented beach popularity is great news for the city, but it’s also a major safety concern for city officials.

With more swimmers, the risk of drownings and other close calls increases.

This week, the city declared its beaches ready and safe for the busy summer season.

Over the past few months, Cancun has prepared its lifeguards for life-saving missions, improved training, and acquired more equipment to keep travelers safe.

This summer, over 22 lifeguards will be deployed across Cancun beaches at any given time to watch over beachgoers.

Travelers will find lifeguards at all of Cancun’s main public beaches, including Langosta, Caracol, Delfines, Del Nino, and Chac Mool, among others.

That figure is in addition to units from the Red Cross and the municipal health services that can be deployed at a moment’s notice in case of emergency.

According to an official from Cancn’s civil protection agency, lifeguards and public health experts constantly monitor the state of the city’s beaches, noting weather conditions and other safety hazards.

Increasingly, lifeguards are also watching out for risky behavior, such as excessive drinking and poor swimming skills, both of which are linked to previous cases of drownings.

Despite the increase in proactive measures from Cancun officials, travelers are urged to behave responsibly, especially when enjoying the city’s crystal-clear waters.

Follow These Important Swimming Safety Tips

While Cancun’s beaches are among the safest in Mexico, experts have highlighted the importance of following essential safety information when enjoying the sea & sun.

One of the most important things travelers can do is to take note of Cancun’s color-coded flag beach safety system.

A green and yellow flag indicates safe swimming conditions, although the latter means swimmers should exercise precaution.

Avoid entering the beach when a red or black flag is displayed.

Local officials also say that beachgoers should avoid entering the water after drinking alcohol or enjoying a large meal, as they are known to increase the risk of drowning.

With temperatures likely rising to new records this summer, visitors should also apply copious amounts of SPF 50+ sunscreen and even avoid going to the beach altogether during intense heat waves.

Lastly, travelers should avoid buying food and drinks from unlicensed beach vendors, who may scam or even sell expired goods to visitors.

With travel numbers skyrocketing, officials are continuing to crack down on illegal beach vendors, removing up to 20 of them daily from public beaches.
