According to a recent study of travel itineraries, Cancun is the top international December destination for Americans for the fifth year in a row. Allianz Partners reviewed around 2.8 million itineraries for vacationers traveling between the dates of December 17 and December 30 with roundtrip tickets departing from cities in the United States. Of those itineraries, 11 percent of them were for trips to international destinations, and Cancun is the destination for most of them.
This isn’t the first year that Cancun has been the number one destination for Americans traveling in December, and as the popular tourist destination continues to grow in popularity, it likely won’t be the last. The second most sought-after destination, San Jose del Cabo, is also in Mexico. But although extremely popular among Americans, due in part to the close proximity to the U.S., the city has remained second to Cancun for the last three years.
Not surprisingly, for the past two years, Mexican tourist cities have held the top three spots for the most popular December vacation destinations. Time and time again, though, Cancun has proven that it is Americans’ favorite winter getaway destination. This is because Cancun has so much to offer. This is probably one of the number one reasons Americans decide to go to Cancun during the winter months, especially those that live in colder areas in the northern part of the country. Temperatures range between around a comfortable 69 and 84 degrees, and the area doesn’t receive as much rain as it does from late summer through fall. Also, because it stays warm in Cancun throughout the year, water temperatures are still warm enough for swimming, hovering around a balmy 80 – 82 degrees.
