Last year Cancun Airport broke its record for the most visitors ever, with more than 30 million passengers arriving at the airport during the year.
This year tourists continue to arrive at the destination in huge numbers, and Cancun Airport is again on track to break all tourism records again this year.
So far, just between the months of January and October, around 27 million travelers have already visited the hugely popular vacation destination.
Cancun Airport In 2023
Of the 27 million passengers already served at Cancun Airport so far this year, more than half of them have come from international destinations.
More than 10 million of these travelers are American tourists, and close to 2 million are Canadian.
Cancun Airport has welcomed more foreign tourists than any other airport in Mexico this year.

2022 – A Record-Breaking Year
In 2022, the total number of travelers served at Cancun Airport was 30.3 million, announcing its 30 millionth passenger in December of last year.
This is 10 million more tourists than what arrived in Cancun in 2020, marking a huge jump in airport traffic following the pandemic.
The 30 millionth passenger, who arrived on December 28th to a festive celebration, was an American tourist from the state of Indiana.

2022 And 2023 Compared
Comparing 2022 to this year, 2.2 million more passengers were served by Cancun Airport than during the same months last year.
This represents an increase in passenger traffic at the busy airport of more than 9 percent compared to 2022 when during the same months, the airport served nearly 25 million.
If this momentum continues through the end of the year, Cancun Airport is on track to break last year’s record, with it being very probable that 31 million or more passengers will have been served by the airport.

Daily Operations At One Of The Busiest Airports In Mexico
On average, Cancun Airport operates more than 500 flights every day.
At the height of last year’s busiest travel seasons in Cancun, the airport was operating around 600 flights a day.
At one point, the busy Cancun Airport even made it to the list of the Top 10 Busiest Airports in the world in regards to international travelers.
Cancun Airport Connectivity
Much of the reason for the huge increase in airport traffic in Cancun is the major growth in connectivity, particularly between Cancun and U.S. cities.
Currently, American tourists can fly direct to Cancun from 40 different cities across the country.
Additionally, there are flights available from more than 20 European cities and nonstop flights from 21 Canadian cities.
A Hub For The Mexican Caribbean
One of the reasons Cancun Airport is so busy is not just because Cancun is so popular, which it definitely is the most popular destination in the Mexican Caribbean.
But it is also surrounded by other hugely popular vacation destinations that travelers fly into Cancun Airport to get to.
It is the hub for the Mexican Caribbean, serving not just Cancun visitors, but also tourists visiting places like Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Puerto Morelos, Cozumel, and more…
What The New Tulum Airport Means For Cancun
A new airport in the Mexican Caribbean, the Tulum International Airport, will begin operating in just a few short weeks.
Some of Cancun Airport’s traffic will undoubtedly be diverted to this new airport, giving the whole region the opportunity to continue this unprecedented growth.
So, as this year closes and another one begins, it will be easier than ever to visit Cancun and the rest of the Mexican Caribbean.
