Actions against taxi and other transportation drivers who abuse their privileges in Cancun have been taking a long time.
Overpricing, aggressively trying to get passengers, and being involved in violent acts and illegal activities have given drivers, especially taxi drivers, a bad reputation.
For years, it seems that they have been getting away with such behavior without any real consequences, but Cancun is now vowing to revoke licenses for badly behaved taxi and Uber drivers.
Let’s examine what Cancun is doing to protect tourists and the image of the hugely popular vacation destination.
New Repercussions For Bad Drivers
Although revoking licenses of badly behaved drivers in Cancun has been mentioned in the past, the process has seemed to be slow-moving.
Now Cancun is finally revoking licenses and concessions, and securing the vehicles of bad drivers in order to protect tourists.
The head of the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office, Raciel Lopez Salazar, commented that “operations against abusive taxi drivers in Cancun will not cease,” reaffirming that such behavior will not be tolerated.
Security Operations To Find Offenders
Ongoing security operations will be carried out to identify taxi and Uber drivers who are offending.
There is very little information on how the operations will work.
Once identified, though, there will be consequences for the drivers.
The Success Of The Operation So Far
Operations to find badly behaved taxi and Uber drivers have already begun and have been successful so far.
According to reports, officials have already revoked 114 concessions and 35 driver’s licenses.
Additionally, 38 vehicles have been confiscated for being involved in illegal activities.
The Most Common Offenses
The most common complaint that tourists have about taxi drivers in Cancun is that the rates that many drivers charge are too high.
There have been instances of tourists being overcharged and even attacked by a taxi driver when they didn’t want to pay the unfair rates.
Other complaints are that taxi drivers are rude, aggressive, and, in some cases, even violent.
The Taxi Driver Vs. Uber Driver Saga
The other big problem with transportation in Cancun is the ongoing taxi driver vs. Uber driver saga.
Taxi drivers have long argued that Uber cannot operate at the airport and have even blocked them from picking up or dropping off passengers at certain hotels.
The constant animosity between the two different transportation providers has left a bad image in the eyes of visitors, something Cancun doesn’t want to deal with.
Alternatives For Getting Around Cancun
The good news is, in addition to the fact that they are cracking down on badly behaved drivers in Cancun, you can also opt for one of several other transportation options.
Public transportation, private transportation, shared and private shuttles, and even car rentals are all available to get from the airport to your hotel.
Buses are the least expensive option, starting at just a few dollars a trip, and private transportation costs the most, coming in at around $100 each way.
The other options fall somewhere in between.
The Number One Reason To Book Your Cancun Airport Transfer In Advance
Several of the transportation options available can be booked in advance, which is highly recommended for a couple of reasons.
One is that you don’t have to worry about what you’ll get charged because you’ll already have it paid for.
The other is that you can arrive in Cancun and walk right out of the airport to your awaiting driver, so there’s no waiting with a bunch of other travelers to find transportation.
This makes it much easier to get your Cancun vacation started off on the right foot.
