It will be pandemic business as usual in the resort city of Cancun. Masks, temperature checks and hand sanitizer will still be in effect but in terms of the city closing? It’s not going to happen.
Secretary of Health for Quintana Roo, Alejandra Aguirre Crespo said that the state which is home to the tourism hotspot of Cancun, will not close due to the third wave of infections. Despite the latest surge of infections within tourism hotspots, Alejandra Crespo insisted the situation would stabilize in the coming weeks.
“Quintana Roo is not going to close. What Quintana Roo is doing is strengthening health and safety protocols so that both national and international visitors can continue their vacations, and their stay in the state in a safe way,” she said.
The state of Quintana Roo is home to the tourism hotspots of Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, Tulum and Cozumel.
In an interview with W Radio, Aguirre Crespo said that tourism protocols are still be strengthened and the situation in expected to improve over the coming weeks. The Secretary of Health stated that advanced sanitation protocols have been in place for all tourism operators, reported local news Noticaribe.
“We hope that we will have stabilization as soon as possible and, I am talking a couple of weeks maximum, where we can have stabilization in the contagion that we are experiencing in Quintana Roo.” stated Alejandra Aguirre Crespo.
The Government of Quintana Roo in partnership with tourism operators around the state have been battling “a third wave of the pandemic” José Luis Alomía the Federal Epidemiological Director said.
The resort city of Cancun recorded its highest number of cases since the pandemic began on May 14 and took multiple steps to limit contagion. None of these steps however would drastically impact the tourist experience with the exception of those who enjoy late night partying at discos and bars.
Streets known for late night congestion and heavy pedestrian traffic were immediately closed from 11:00 pm until 3:00 am. Although there was a lot of speculation regarding discos and night clubs being closed, multiple travelers have reported to The Cancun Sun that the bars have remained open.
The other restriction that could have had an impact on visitors was the reduction in capacity limits. Under the Orange Alert traffic light system that the State of Quintana Roo is under, restaurants and hotels are to remain at no more than a 50% capacity.
While multiple media outlets said that resorts could cancel bookings, there have been no actual cancellations issued to any guest that have been reported. With tourism being categorized as an essential business since June of 2020 in the state of Quintana Roo, the tourism sector has been largely free to operate as usual with the exception of capacity limits and following Covid-19 prevention protocols.
Additional Restrictions In Effect for Cancun
- Strict enforcement of capacity limits at restaurants and hotels. Businesses could lose their license for not following the restrictions.
- Any large gathering including fairs, exhibitions and sporting events must take place in a ‘sanitary bubble’ which includes the testing of all attendees.
- . Main streets where people congregate will be closed during the high hours of risk which occur in the late evening.
- Public and private transportation will be monitored so vehicles do not over over the maximum allowed capacity
- 5. Large social gatherings will be shut down and hosts will be fined/charged with putting public health at risk.
The State Secretary of Health concluded her interview taking a strong stance against the State of Quintana Roo reverting to a ‘Red Light’ which is the highest warning level of Covid-19 contagion.
“We are making all health, epidemiological and social efforts to not return to a red light. Our intention, together with those of the state government and Governor Carlos Joaquín, is to not return to the red light, Aguirre Crespo stated. “We have carried out a series of or more than a year in order to prevent and contain the epidemic.”
