Escape The Crowds! 5 Reasons This Laid-Back Paradise South Of Cancun Is Trending This Fall

Last Updated

As travelers increasingly seek to explore the Mexican Caribbean beyond Cancun’s crowded beaches and pricey all-inclusive resorts, the charming seaside town of Puerto Morelos has experienced a surge in popularity, according to Raúl Guadarrama García, the municipal secretary of Sustainable Tourism.

Home to authentic Mexican Caribbean charm, coupled with top-rated all-inclusives and world-class excursions, Puerto Morelos stands out as one of the most versatile family-friendly destinations in the region.

And this fall, the coastal hotspot is trending with all types of travelers seeking out laid-back vibes and an unbeatable beach experience.

With that in mind, here’s a closer look at 5 reasons why Puerto Morelos is all the rage with travelers this fall.

Top-Rated Beachfront Resorts

A mere 45 minutes south of Cancun, Puerto Morelos is a vibrant fishing village with a modern twist.

The coastal town offers over two kilometers of white-sand beaches, many of which are lined with top-rated all-inclusives.

But unlike Cancun’s packed resort district, travelers in Puerto Morelos can enjoy their southern holiday while avoiding the crowds, making this an ideal choice for those seeking a quieter retreat.

Some of Puerto Morelos’s top accommodations include the 5-star Grand Residences Riviera Cancun, a modern family-friendly resort complex offering ample beach views, outdoor pools, and a boutique feel.

Another top choice is the equally luxurious but adults-only El Dorado Casitas Royale, featuring gourmet dining options and rooms with swim-up pools.

Endless Fun For The Whole Family

Another reason to consider visiting Puerto Morelos is to enjoy the town’s plethora of fun activities.

From private cenotes tours to foodie journeys, this quaint village is packed with enticing experiences for the senses.

Families can seek out tours of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, located offshore, and marvel at Puerto Morelos’ underwater ecosystems.

The Crococun Zoo is another popular choice for families, allowing kids to get up close with reptiles of all kinds.

Clean Sargassum-Free Beaches

Puerto Morelos has seen its popularity explode as a leading beach destination in the Mexican Caribbean largely due to efforts to bolster the cleanliness of its white-sand shores.

This year, the city has hired more than 45 full-time cleaners to ensure that Puerto Morelos beaches remain in top-notch condition for travelers.

And those efforts have paid off, with the coastal town reporting consistently low sargassum levels throughout the summer.

What’s more, this summer, city officials launched an ambitious renovation program to improve visitor facilities along the town’s coastline.

Over the coming months, visitors can expect to see more public toilets, improved cleanliness, and more beach access points.

Conveniently Close To Top Archeological Attractions

While Puerto Morelos is renowned for its coastal atmosphere, it’s also a convenient home base from which to embark on a journey through Quintana Roo’s many archeological sites.

Tulum’s popular Archeological Site is just an hour south of Puerto Morelos, enabling day trips through the city’s vast ruins and the upcoming Jaguar National Park.

Cobá is another popular choice, located a mere 90 minutes from the city, and features the tallest climbable pyramid in the region.

And with the Maya Train southward expansion set to wrap up soon, travelers will be able to reach the region’s main Mayan sites faster than ever.

Safety Is A Top Priority

Largely considered a safe destination – especially for families – Puerto Morelos is dotted with amazing all-inclusives and family-friendly attractions.

The town’s main hotspots, including beaches, resort areas, and the zócalo, or downtown district, are patrolled by a sizable contingent of law enforcement officers throughout the year.

Despite its welcoming and laid-back ambiance, travelers should still exercise caution when venturing through the charming destination, as petty crimes can still occur.
