Is Tulum Safe? Officials Announce Major Security Upgrade

Last Updated

As Tulum surges in popularity to become one of the trendiest resort destinations in the Mexican Caribbean, officials in the coastal hotspot are taking security measures to a new level with the addition of 500 new surveillance cameras.

The measure – part of a wider push to improve safety in the growing hotspot – was announced this week by the city’s mayor, as work continues on Tulum’s new Maya Train station as well as a number of new infrastructure upgrades.

Home to the largest and most popular Mayan site in Quintana Roo, Tulum is the premier destination for historical and cultural travel in the region.

The coastal destination also boasts white-sand beaches, top-rated resorts, and a diverse nightlife scene.

This year, thanks to the city’s new international airport, Tulum is gearing up for even more visitors.

But with safety still a major concern for many travelers, officials want to put to rest any doubts about the city’s reputation.

With that in mind, here’s the latest on Tulum’s upcoming safety upgrade.

Tulum Intensifies Safety Commitment With New Cameras And Command Center

Widely recognized as one of the most dynamic and alluring destinations in the Mexican Caribbean, Tulum has seen consistent growth in arrival numbers following the inauguration of the massive Felipe Carrillo International Airport.

And with the upcoming expansion of the Maya Train railway network to the southern hotspot, Cancun travelers will begin flocking to the historical destination in search of sea, sun, and ancient Mayan history.

The projected travel influx is not without its downsides; with a shaky safety track record, Tulum’s law enforcement officials are concerned over a potential uptick in crimes targeting wealthy visitors.

While violent crime rarely affects travelers directly in Tulum, petty crimes, such as pickpocketing, scams, and reckless driving are key concerns facing travelers in the popular city.

This week, Tulum’s mayor Diego Castanon revealed a major effort to tackle crime and protect travelers in the sunny seaside destination.

According to the executive, the city will install up to 500 new security cameras as well as a state-of-the-art command center to monitor key hot spots across Tulum.

The goal, Mr. Castanon says, is to deter criminals from targeting travelers and to ensure a sense of safety for thousands of daily travelers.

From Mayan sites such as the stunning Tulum Archeological Zone to the coastal resort area, all of Tulum’s main touristy areas will benefit from the new measures.

Workers have already begun installing the new surveillance cameras across the city, with more expected to become operational in the coming months. The cameras will be linked to Tulum’s new C2 Command Center, where law enforcement will be able to monitor the city in real-time.

Tulum officials are also stepping up efforts to improve cooperation with other law enforcement agencies at the state and federal levels, thus protecting travelers from crime.

The upcoming launching of the southern section of the Maya Train station will bring thousands of day-trippers to Tulum.

A new 350-room resort is also under construction adjacent to the new train station, providing high-quality accommodation for longer stays.

Until now, reaching Tulum from Cancun meant taking a long bus ride or a costly private transfer, making the city far less competitive compared to Playa del Carmen or Puerto Morelos.

However, with several new infrastructure projects on the way, the coastal destination is expected to become one of the more accessible hotspots in the region, competing with Cancun and other northern hotspots.

With this new project, safety in the destination will be even more enhanced. Visitors can rest easy knowing Tulum is doing everything it can to ensure their safety.
