A large fire broke out at a beachfront restaurant in Isla Mujeres destroying multiple businesses. Despite the effort of dozens of employees from around the area, multiple buildings were destroyed in the fire.
According to the Director of Municipal Civil Protection, the fire started inside a cooking fryer in the restaurant. Flames spread rapidly to the dry grass rooftop where the blaze destroyed 5 businesses before being contained.
The businesses destroyed in the blaze included three restaurants and two craft shops.
Local onlookers reported that Employees scrambled to remove what they could from the buildings, running back and forth multiple times to save what they could from their businesses. There were no injuries or fatalities reported from the blaze.
The blaze reportedly burned for hours before the local fire department was able to get the fire under control and extinguished.
The fire began around 11:00 a.m. on Monday and had completely engulfed the businesses less than 20 minutes later on the island’s main Avenida Rueda Medina. Strong winds reportedly caused the blaze to spread quickly before firefighters arrived.
