There is definitely no shortage of hotels in the Mexican Caribbean and now there will be another luxury option in the near future, as it was just announced that a new Nobu hotel will be built in Tulum. Partnering with RCD Hotels, a company that already has multiple properties in the Riviera Maya, Nobu will be opening a Hotel, Restaurant, and Residences in the city. There is no date set for opening as of right now but the project is in the works.
The launching of the newest Nobu property is a cause for celebration for the company as it marks a significant milestone. This will be the 30th Nobu property in the world and the 2nd one to be opened in Mexico. The Nobu Los Cabos is also in partnership with RCD Hotels, as are a total of four other hotels, in addition to the Cabo property and the new property coming to Tulum.
The Nobu Hotel, Restaurant, and Residences is going to be a luxurious oceanfront hotel with 200 rooms and suites, 12 of which will be spacious villas. The property will also feature 50 residences that will be located on the beachside. Some of the amenities that will be available for guests and residents include a state-of-the-art fitness center, a spa, and a beautiful venue for special events and weddings in breathtaking outdoor spaces.
The Nobu Restaurant at the new Tulum hotel will likely be one of the most highly anticipated features of the property, as it is known for its world-class dining experiences. Serving elevated sushi and Japanese dishes, Chef Nobu Matsuhisa has won multiple awards, including the coveted James Beard Foundation Award for Outstanding Chef. He is known for his fusion of ingredients from South America with Japanese dishes, such as his famous Miso Black Cod.
Nobu Hospitality was founded by Mr. Matsuhisa along with Meir Teper, and an individual many of us have heard of, actor Robert De Niro. In addition to the now 30 hotels owned by the group, they also own approximately 50 restaurants around the world, in partnership with restaurateur Drew Nieporent. The first Nobu restaurant came before the first Nobu hotel.
De Niro was a customer of Matsuhisa’s first restaurant, named Matsuhisa after the chef himself, in Los Angeles for more than a year before he first suggested that he open a restaurant in New York City. This was in 1989 but after opting not to it wasn’t until he suggested it again in 1994 that Matsuhisa agreed. It was the same year that the two men formed a partnership with the others and open the first Nobu restaurant.
The first Nobu hotel did not open until 2013 and is located inside Ceasars Palaces in Las Vegas, NV. By 2020 the group had opened 13 hotels around the world and now only 2 years later they are up to 30 with the new Tulum Nobu Hotel, Restaurant, and Residences. The group also has a couple of other Nobu Hotel projects in the works.
There is little information regarding how the new Tulum property will look or where the exact location is but with the track record that Nobu has it can be expected to be pretty fabulous. Tulum is a beautiful Mexican Caribbean destination with a lot to offer in the way of history and outdoor activities. The addition of the luxurious Nobu Hotel, Restaurant, and Residences will just add to the list of great reasons to make a trip to Tulum during your next Riviera Maya vacation.
