New Report Shows That Cancun Is The 2nd Most Popular Destination In The Americas

If there was ever a question about the popularity of Cancun, there shouldn’t be now.   

A new report shows that Cancun is the 2nd most popular destination in the Americas.   

The recently released report, a collaboration between the UN and Amadeus Group, shows that based on air travel bookings, Cancun is second to only New York in popularity.

The Top 10 Cities In The Americas Being Searched 

This illuminating Amadeus report revealed the 10 cities in the Americas that have the most flight reservations.   

Cancun is second on this list.

  1. Los Angeles 
  1. Miami 
  1. Vancouver

2024 Travel Search Trends 

In addition to revealing which cities have the most flights booked, the Amadeus report showed a few other interesting travel-related facts.   

The first is that 1.3 billion people traveled internationally last year, an increase of more than 30 percent compared to 2022.   

Additionally, searches for May, June, July, and August for trips to countries in the Americas, including North America, Central America, and South America, grew by a whopping 132 percent compared to the same months last year.

Cancun’s Growing Airline Connectivity 

Cancun’s place on the list of destinations with the most flight reservations is undoubtedly due in great part to its growing airline connectivity.   

In total, 48 airlines fly to Cancun International Airport, and direct flights are available from 125 airports worldwide.   

An average of around 500 flights arrive at the airport every day, totaling more than 13,000 a month.

Travelers fly to Cancun from a total of 120 cities around the world.   

Those cities are spread out between 28 different countries, but there is one international destination with more direct flights to Cancun than any other, the United States.   

There are 42 U.S. airports with airlines offering nonstop flights to Cancun!

Arriving At And Departing From Cancun Airport 

Cancun Airport is busy pretty much every day of the week, so whether you’re arriving or departing, you want to be prepared.   

If you have all of your documentation handy upon arrival, you’ll get through the lines quicker, and you’ll get to your hotel faster if you book private transportation in advance.   

For departure, you’ll want to get to the airport about three hours early, and you can make the wait for your flight more bearable by buying access to one of the airport’s VIP lounges, for around $30.

Why Travelers Love Cancun 

A lot of people probably think that tourists go to Cancun just for the beaches.   

Many travelers indeed do, but there are many other things to do in and around Cancun.   

A lot of visitors travel to the region to do things like visit Mayan ruins, explore the nearby islands, swim in cenotes, party it up at Cancun’s vibrant nightclubs, splash through underground rivers, and get an adrenaline rush at one of the region’s awesome adventure parks too.

Cancun is only likely to continue to grow in popularity.   

More and more all-inclusives are opening all the time, so there is no shortage of accommodations for the growing demand.   

Furthermore, the Maya Train will undoubtedly attract even more travelers with the allure of being able to easily and affordably explore the entire Mexican Caribbean, which most will fly into Cancun Airport to do.
