Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean are some of the hottest summer destinations this year for American travelers according to new figures published this week.

With occupancy rates exceeding 80% in key hotspots, the sun-soaked state of Quintana Roo is in the midst of a potentially record-breaking season as travelers flock to enjoy its white-sand beaches and top-rated resorts.

However, not all resort destinations in the sunny region are equally popular; some, like Isla Mujeres, have sold nearly all rooms, whereas others are struggling to attract travelers.

With that in mind, here’s a look at the most popular hotspots in the Mexican Caribbean right now.

Cancun And Isla Mujeres Top Summer Popularity Charts Amid Travel Boom

As expected, Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean are again experiencing a highly successful summer season as travel numbers soar.

New figures revealed this week by the state-run Secretariat for Tourism show that nearly 500,000 international travelers are currently enjoying the Mexican Caribbean state of Quintana Roo, with a whopping 40% of all visitors coming from the United States.

But the summer season is just getting started, with peak travel volumes expected to occur sometime in mid-August. But let’s dive into the current trending hotspots.

Isla Mujeres – The Hottest Mexican Caribbean Destination Right Now

With its award-winning beaches, excellent luxury resorts, and unique outdoor activities, Isla Mujeres currently ranks first in traveler popularity with occupancy rates of over 80%.

That means that just two in ten hotel rooms are unoccupied, as the summer travel frenzy intensifies.

It’s a usual summer sight for Isla Mujeres, which is located just 15 minutes by ferry from Cancun. The popular tropical island is a convenient day trip destination for travelers staying on the mainland, but its more than 200 hotels also enable longer stays.

Cancun Remains A Traveler Favorite

It’s no surprise that Cancun is currently second in popularity when measured by the city’s nearly 80% occupancy rate. After all, the sunny city is the main entry point for millions of travelers.

The city’s Hotel Zone is especially popular – reporting occupancy rates of nearly 90% – and offers travelers top-rated all-inclusives coupled with excellent safety thanks to the ongoing summer safety operation.

Cancun is also the leading beach destination in Mexico this year; home to dozens of top-rated beaches, the coastal hotspot is enjoying a nearly sargassum-free summer, drawing huge crowds to soak up the sun.

Cancun is also a key point along the Maya Train railway network, connecting arriving travelers to other hotspots across the Mexican Caribbean.

Riviera Maya Attracts Travelers To Its White-Sand Beaches

With its stunning 75-mile-long coastline, the Riviera Maya is one of the most popular Mexican Caribbean destinations this summer.

The resort area – from Playa del Carmen down to Tulum – is home to dozens of smaller beach towns dotted with gorgeous beachfront all-inclusives and powdery beaches.

With an occupancy rate of 77%, the resort area is currently the third most popular in the region, trailing Cancun and Isla Mujeres.

Travelers can enjoy quiet beaches, fun experiences, and excellent safety in the Riviera Maya, making it a great choice for both solo travelers as well as families.

Some of the top accommodations in the resort region include the world-famous Hotel Xcaret Mexico, which sits on a massive property that is beautifully integrated with natural features including pools and lagoons.
