Travelers have started flocking to Cancun in droves as the busy summer season focally kicks off.
With more than 600 daily flights in and out of Cancun airport, the city’s travel industry is gearing up for a record-breaking season.
Against that backdrop, Cancun’s ferry companies are anticipating a particularly successful season as thousands of travelers book tickets to visit nearby Isla Mujeres, an island dubbed as this summer’s hottest destination.
Here’s why Cancun’s ferry industry is booming right now, as well as everything travelers need to know before embarking on a journey to discover the stunning beauty of Isla Mujeres.
Boat Operators Seeing Skyrocketing Demand Despite Inflationary Worries
Even though many Cancun travelers are perfectly content with lounging in the premises of the city’s numerous luxurious all-inclusive resorts, more and more travelers are keen on exploring the city’s vibrant surroundings.
And this summer, Isla Mujeres is trending as one of the most popular island destinations close to Cancun. A Magical Town since 2015, Isla Mujeres boasts much more than just sun and beach. It’s also one of the most historical locations in all of the Mexican Caribbean and is teeming with culture.

The island can only be reached by boat or ferry, and with the destination’s popularity skyrocketing this summer, Cancun’s excursion firms are feeling the effects of record arrival numbers.
According to Ricardo Mulero López, head of the Quintana Roo Nautical Association, ferry trips to Isla Mujeres are currently seeing the highest demand out of all water-based tours and activities in the area, with an estimated 5,000 travelers making the 15-minute trip to Isla Mujeres daily.
Soaring demand – as well as the strong performance of the Mexican peso in the global currency market – is pushing prices up, and some tour operators have increased fares by up to 30% compared to last year.

How To Reach Isla Mujeres From Cancun
Travelers wishing to explore the rising star of the Mexican Caribbean have several options available to them. The most popular – and convenient – way to reach Isla Mujeres is via ferry.
There are currently a handful of local ferry companies, with firms like Ultramar offering dozens of daily departures. A round trip from the hotel zone to Isla Mujeres currently costs around $32 per adult. Ultramar offers 9 daily departures to the sun-soaked island, and each trip takes around one and a half hours.
With Isla Mujeres hotel rates quickly rising, many travelers are opting to do smaller and more affordable day trips. Measuring just 4 square kilometers in size, enjoying Isla Mujeres is a breeze, and travelers can hit the most popular sights – including the renowned Playa Norte and Playa Centro in one day.
That said, the island also boasts some of the most luxurious all-inclusives in the region, including the recently-opened Impression By Secrets Isla Mujeres, which despite the growing crowds, manages to offer unparalleled privacy and luxury for a true tropical getaway.
Travelers can also choose from a range of guided tours, with Tripadvisor and Viator offering an excellent assortment of day trips and excursions.
This top-rated option has earned Viator’s Badge of Excellence, having garnered some impressive traveler reviews. The half-day snorkeling and sightseeing tour lasts five hours, and transportation occurs on a stunning sailboat.
Along the way, guests can enjoy an open bar and endless picture opportunities – not no mention a healthy dose of tropical rays – after which they can explore Isla Mujeres’ azure waters and vibrant marine wildlife.
