Although Cancun remains by far the most popular destination in the Mexican Caribbean for U.S. travelers, Costa Mujeres, a hotspot located just north of the coastal city, is vying to steal that title.
That’s all the more so after the coastal resort district was given the Best of the Best Destinations distinction by Tripadvisor, the world’s leading travel review platform.
Known for its quaint beaches and top-tier resorts, this booming stretch of Mexican Caribbean coastline is quickly catching up to Cancun in popularity.
This year, Costa Mujeres is breaking records as travelers flock to what many experts call the new Cancun.
With that in mind, here’s a look at what makes Costa Mujeres so special.
Costa Mujeres Continues To Captivate Travelers With Luxury Resorts And Pristine Beaches
Much like Cancun, Costa Mujeres has all the elements of a successful tropical destination: warm crystal-clear waters, stunning resorts, and a peaceful atmosphere that invites visitors to relax and unwind.
Costa Mujeres is a breath of fresh air as far as Mexican Caribbean destinations go; as a relatively new resort location, the quaint beach area is slowly but surely earning a reputation as one of the top hotspots in the region.
That’s especially true after the sun-soaked town was proclaimed a Best of the Best destination in 2024 by Tripadvisor.
The prestigious distinction is only awarded to a handful of destinations each year in Mexico based on a number of factors, including traveler reviews, the availability and quality of tourist attractions, and safety.
And with existing resorts regularly ranking as some of the best in the Mexican Caribbean, it’s no wonder Costa Mujeres managed to achieve the prestigious Tripadvisor status.
Thanks to its growing assortment of new luxury resorts, Costa Mujeres stands out as an excellent alternative to hotspots like Cancun and Playa del Carmen, which suffer from issues like excessive noise, packed beaches, and skyrocketing hotel occupancy rates.
Meanwhile, Costa Mujeres boasts several dozen exclusive resorts offering private white-sand beaches, lavish amenities, and excellent safety.
But the destination is also renowned for its history & culture. Home to one of the most popular Mayan ruins in the area – the el Meco site – Costa Mujeres offers much more than just luxurious resorts & pricy getaways.
Another reason behind the location’s skyrocketing popularity is its excellent foodie culture. Many of Costa Mujeres’ top resorts boast award-winning restaurants featuring excellent local & international cuisine.
Most top-rated restaurants are located in Costa Mujeres’ massive all-inclusive, such as ATELIER Playa Mujeres, which offers 13 restaurants including the revered María Dolores By Edgar Nunez.
As demand for Costa Mujeres continues to grow at a steady rate. The coastal hotspot currently boasts close to 10,000 rooms, that number is only expected to increase as more companies announce new properties.
One of the latest leading hospitality firms to launch a new project in the sunny destination is H10, which recently revealed it would build a 600-room resort along the location’s extensive white-sand coastline.
The new Ocean-branded- resort will feature a huge spa complex, plazas, patios, and plenty of green spaces, among other qualities.
In addition to its growing inventory of luxury resorts, Costa Mujeres is also regarded as a safe and welcoming destination for travelers of all ages. It’s especially ideal for travelers seeking a quiet retreat thanks to the numerous gated communities and privacy offered by its vast resorts.
