Travelers from the Midwestern United States looking for another ultra-low-cost option to travel to Cancun for a beach resort vacation will soon have a new choice in airlines.
Frontier Airlines made an announcement recently that it plans to expand its non-stop seasonal flight routes to Cancun from three new key airports in the region starting on November 16.
Expanding Midwest Service
Starting on Thursday, November 16, Frontier Airlines will provide low-cost seasonal non-stop service to Cancun International Airport (CUN) from three new airports in the Midwestern United States.
The three new airports are Chicago-Midway (MDW), Detroit (DTW), and Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP). The non-stop seasonal direct service to Cancun will be daily.
“We’re thrilled to expand our nonstop offerings across our network,” said Daniel Shurz, senior vice president of commercial at Frontier Airlines in a press release. “As we get closer to winter, now is the time to start planning those tropical getaways.”
The new Frontier Airlines service from Chicago-Midway puts it in direct competition with rival Southwest Airlines for flights to the Cancun International Airport.
It will be in competition with Delta Air Lines to serve Cancun from both the Detroit and Minneapolis/St. Paul routes.
Meanwhile, Detroit is also served by low-cost provider Spirit Airlines.
Frontier will be kicking off the new routes to Cancun International Airport, including new flights from Miami (MIA), at a promotional fare starting as low as $79.
The new flights are expected to be available as part of the company’s all-you-can-fly pass promotion.

It is currently offering a Fall & Winter Go Wild! All You Can Fly Pass for only $299 per year, covering September 2 to February 29. It is normally priced at $999 per year.
Frontier’s Midwest Strategy
The new Frontier Airlines flight routes complement the company’s strategy already in place to link cities in the Midwest with tropical destinations such as Cancun.
The ultra-low-cost airline already offers regular flights to Cancun International Airport from Chicago-O’Hare, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and St. Louis.
It also offers a number of seasonal flights to Cancun International Airport from the region at airports in Kansas City and Indianapolis.
The airline, based in Denver, operates a base at the Chicago-Midway airport.
Increasing Demand for Midwest Flights
Even though most of the cities in the Midwest did not crack the top 20 international flight destinations from Cancun International Airport in 2022, there is strong interest in developing the region for tropical beach destination vacations.
American Airlines also recently announced a number of record number new flights to Cancun from the Midwestern United States.
It will be adding seasonal non-stop flights to Cancun International Airport from both Cincinnati and Nashville and resuming service from Pittsburgh.
It already offers flights from Kansas City, Indianapolis, Chicago-O’Hare, and St. Louis.
However, Frontier Airlines just beat American Airlines to the punch.
American announced its service will start a month later on December 9. It also is not a low-cost carrier.
Midwest Travelers Benefit
For travelers looking to book a vacation in the resort beach destination of Cancun, the added flights and competition are great news.
The new entry of another ultra-low-cost airline in three major Midwest markets means that budget travelers to Cancun International Airport from the region will have another choice option for their flights./
It will not only bring competition for fares, but it will also add additional flight times and options for travelers.
The fact that most Midwestern cities are not even in the top 20 for international destinations from Cancun means that more residents of the region will be exposed to non-stop flight options to Cancun.
Hopefully, the new Cancun flights will provide a new Mexican beach destination adventure for travelers from some of the largest cities in the nation.
