Cancun is more popular than ever among travelers, and the city expects to draw a record two million visitors this summer.
Once considered low season for travel to the coastal resort city, summer has now become one of the most alluring periods for visitors to flock to Cancun.
The city welcomes visitors to enjoy its powdery white-sand coastline and stunning accommodations.
New figures revealed this week suggest that resorts in Cancun may see an occupancy rate of nearly 90% this August, a number not too distant from those seen at the peak of the winter season.
Even amid the intense hurricane season – not to mention soaring temperatures – Cancun only continues to grow as a summer destination. In this article, we’ll take a look at why that’s the case.
Cancun Resorts Selling Out This Summer As Travelers Flock For Taste Of Caribbean Sun
For many travelers, Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean are best enjoyed from November to April, the colder months of the year.
But in summer 2024, the city is proving to be particularly popular among travelers, ranking as one of the most sought-after hotspots this summer.
New figures published this week by Cancun’s Secretary for Tourism Juan Pablo de Zulueta reveal that the crown jewel of the Mexican Caribbean is expected to see its busiest summer on record.
Travel to the sunny destination is set to grow by nearly 4% compared to last year, with just 15% of all rooms unoccupied in the city on average between June and September.
The number of arrivals is expected to grow gradually throughout the summer, reaching its forecasted peak sometime in mid-August, when nearly 90% of hotel rooms in the resort zone will be sold out.
Meanwhile, July will also be a busy month for the coastal hotspot, with travelers primarily flocking to the city’s beaches and 5-star resorts from the United States & Canada.
Mr Zulueta added that Cancun is taking a more proactive approach to assisting travelers amid the record-breaking summer season. The city recently launched a new visitor center situated on kilometer 13 of the resort zone.
The office provides around-the-clock assistance to travelers with everything from stolen passports to lost luggage, and hundreds of visitors walk through its doors daily.
Cancun Resorts To Nearly Sell Out This Winter
While the ongoing summer vacation period is shattering records, experts say visitor volumes are only a fraction of what they will be this winter.
Fresh booking statistics suggest that a number of resorts in Cancun and other key hotspots are already selling out, with hoteliers expecting a record-shattering 95% occupancy rate towards the end of the year.
In addition to Cancun, some of the most sought-after destinations currently seeing the most bookings include Playa del Carmen and Akumal, with both hotspots projected to sell over 90% of their rooms this year.
Aiding the region’s soaring travel numbers are two key infrastructure projects.
On the one hand, the new Maya Train railway network is boosting interest in Mayan history and making travel to places like Tulum and beyond easier.
Meanwhile, Tulum’s new International Airport is already welcoming up to five thousand travelers per day as the number of flights from the U.S. rises. The airport has nonstop connections to key U.S. airports, including New York, Atlanta, and Los Angeles.
A pro tip for travelers: book in advance, as visitors are increasingly securing their next Mexican Caribbean getaway several months before departure.
