Tulum International Airport has officially begun operations as of today, Friday December 1st, significantly boosting the coastal hotspot’s connectivity with the United States and beyond.

The massive multi-billion airport is designed to accommodate up to five million passengers annually. At a time of soaring travel numbers and unprecedented international popularity, the new international airport will make reaching Tulum and other Mexican Caribbean hotspots easier than ever before.

Tulum is one of the hottest destinations in the Mexican Caribbean right now. Home to the most visited Mayan ruins in Quintana Roo and countless pristine white-sand beaches, this stunning historical hotspot has a lot to offer to travelers.

The coastal destination has seen its popularity rise steadily over the past few years as more travelers flock to enjoy its vibrant culture and laid-back tropical lifestyle.

But even more, travelers will soon be able to visit the Caribbean destination thanks to the inauguration of the brand-new Tulum International Airport. The multi-billion aerial hub is due to begin receiving flights today, December 1, 2023, marking a new era for international travel to Tulum and the southern portion of Quintana Roo.

One of the most important infrastructure projects to date in the region, the new airport is a priority for the national government. That’s why Mexico’s president Andrés López Obrador will take part in the opening ceremony together with Quintana Roo’s governor Mara Lezama.

A number of airlines have already announced routes to the new Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport, although initially, only domestic carriers will operate flights there.

Several U.S.-based airlines, including Spirit and United, will launch flights to the sun-drenched destination early next year.

Tulum’s new international airport features state-of-the-art technology in everything from its security systems to flight handling operations. Meanwhile, its main landing strip measures 3.7 kilometers in length, making it the longest in all of Mexico, enabling the airport to accommodate larger aircraft.

Travelers can find a modern and bright interior design with plenty of references to Mayan design and culture that reflect the historic significance of the Tulum region. Officials have also invested significantly in new safety systems and have deployed hundreds of law enforcement personnel to monitor the new aerial hub to protect travelers.

Although Tulum’s new international airport isn’t expected to be nearly as busy as its Cancun counterpart, the new aerial hub is set to welcome over a million travelers during the first several months of its operations.

In a time of skyrocketing travel numbers in Cancun and elsewhere in the Mexican Caribbean, the new high-tech airport will play a critical role in distributing the flow of inbound travelers in the region.

And with Cancun International Airport expected to break travel records this year, Tulum’s airport will ease congestion and improve international connectivity.

Next year, several U.S. carriers will begin operating flights to the new airport. United became the latest airline to reveal new flights to the trendy destination and will launch new nonstop connections to the historic destination starting in March next year.

Together with the launching of the Maya Train later this December, the new Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport is expected to boost the coastal hotspot’s travel numbers.

Finally, great addition to tourism, should alleviate traffic congestion on Carretera Federal Cancún Tulum, Next we need alternate parallel route to Highway 307 Any accidents on the route highway back's up for 20/50 kilometers or more and many hours wasted stuck in traffic
