Why These 2 Resort Hotspots Near Cancun Are Trending Ahead Of Summer

Last Updated

Despite being in the peak of the shoulder season, Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean are reporting excellent occupancy rates as travelers flock to enjoy the region’s white-sand beaches.

But outside of Cancun, two sun-soaked destinations are proving to be particularly popular with travelers, with resorts nearly selling out ahead of the busy summer season.

That’s according to new statistics published by Quintana Roo’s Secretariat for Tourism, which show that Tulum and Costa Mujeres are currently the trendiest Mexican Caribbean hotspots.

With that in mind, here’s why travelers are booking their all-inclusive getaways in these stunning destinations this spring.

High-End Resorts And Mayan Culture Draw Travelers To These Hotspots

Even though the busiest time for spring travel may be over, thousands of visitors are still arriving in Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean each day.

The shoulder season – which runs from mid-April until the end of May – is generally a quieter time for the region’s travel industry.

However, two destinations are currently breaking that trend, reporting occupancy rates that one would only expect to see during the summer or winter time.

Hotels and resorts in Tulum and Costa Mujeres are nearly fully sold out right now, according to the latest insight from the region’s number-crunching agency.

In Costa Mujeres, a vibrant resort district just north of Cancun, only 15% of all rooms are empty, an astonishing figure given the slow season being experienced in other parts of the Mexican Caribbean.

Costa Mujeres is a relatively new resort destination.

Unlike Cancun’s popular resort zone, which has limited space for new resorts, Costa Mujeres boasts several kilometers of white-sand beaches that are attracting more and more new resorts.

Even now, travelers can find over a dozen top-rated all-inclusives there, including the modern 5-star Grand Palladium Resort.

Aside from its top-tier selection of resorts, Costa Mujeres offers a safe, laid-back, and family-friendly atmosphere that makes it a great alternative to Cancun’s hustle and bustle.

Meanwhile, Tulum, the leading destination for historical and cultural travel in the Mexican Caribbean, is also seeing its occupancy rates skyrocket.

According to the latest statistical overview, nearly 83% of all rooms are currently sold out in the sunny destination, making this the second most sought-after resort hotspot in the region.

The excellent occupancy rates reflect travelers’ growing appetite for authentic Mayan experiences, which Tulum is famous for.

The city’s vast Archeological Zone is by far the most visited in the region, welcoming over a million travelers each year.

Tulum’s popularity is only expected to continue growing over the coming months, thanks to the launching of the Maya Train railway system.

Despite ongoing delays concerning the project’s Southern Fifth Section, which connects Playa del Carmen to Tulum, officials have reassured travelers the railway system will be up and running by September this year.

That’s great news for travelers seeking to explore the countless Mayan ruins located in and around Tulum, including the relatively unexplored site of Cobá.

Visitors seeking a quiet Mexican Caribbean retreat are better off booking a stay in the Gran Costa Maya, which is currently reporting an average occupancy rate of just 48%. The relatively low figure means that travelers can get better deals on accommodation as resorts seek to bolster occupancy.

The Gran Costa Maya is comprised of three unique destinations: Bacalar, Mahahual, and Chetumal. Each offers something different to travelers.
