Why This Gorgeous Destination South Of Cancun Is Trending With Tourists This Winter

Last Updated

There are several amazing vacation destinations in the Mexican Caribbean and throughout the Yucatan Peninsula, but one in particular is getting a lot of attention right now.

Bacalar, an inland destination that’s about 4.5 hours from Cancun, is not located on the Caribbean coast but has a stunning lake that draws tourists from far and wide.

For this and several other reasons that we’ll cover, this gorgeous destination south of Cancun is trending with tourists this winter.

The Lagoon Of Seven Colors

The number one draw for tourists in Bacalar is the stunning Lagoon of Seven Colors, or in Spanish, Laguna de Siete Colores.

This beautiful lake is exactly what it sounds like, a lake that is a breathtaking combination of seven different shades of blue.

The lagoon is the perfect spot for all kinds of water activities, especially kayaking and paddleboarding, because the views are mesmerizing.

Culture

Bacalar has a rich history and storied past that lends to its authentic culture.

Not only was the region occupied by the Maya prior to when the Spanish arrived, but it was often targeted and occupied by pirates during the 17th century.

There are Mayan ruins about an hour from the city, the Kohunlich ruins, a Maya museum in town, an impressive fort in the center of town, an 18th-century church to visit, and so much more that will allow you to explore Bacalar’s fascinating history and culture.

Nature

Bacalar’s number one claim to fame, which includes but is not limited to the Lagoon of Seven Colors, is its nature.

One of the most visited natural attractions is a cenote that lies at the center of the lagoon, called Cenote Azul, which is surrounded by a small forest.

There’s also an area of the massive lagoon called Los Rapidos that is essentially a natural lazy river that you can float down.

Additionally, there is an island in the middle of the lagoon that is a stop for migratory birds.

Each of these spots offers a unique nature experience that you can only find in Bacalar.

Relaxation

One of the great things about Bacalar is that it’s a quieter, more laid-back destination that’s perfect if you’re looking for a more relaxing vacation.

It’s still a bit of a “best-kept secret” as far as tourism goes, and many of the tourists who do know about it take a day trip from another destination rather than stay over.

This leaves it wide open for those who want to take advantage of the peace and quiet.

@travelsbytash Make sure to visit Bacalar on your next trip to Mexico! The colour of the water here is insane 😍 #backpackingmexico #solofemalebackpacker #bacalarmexico #visitmexico🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽 #mexicotips ♬ Walking On a Dream – Empire of the Sun

Amazing Weather

Another reason tourists love Bacalar is the amazing weather that the destination gets throughout most of the year.

Daytime temperatures consistently average around 86 degrees and typically don’t go too far beyond the low 90s.

The evening temperatures average around a comfortable 68 degrees.

@celestayyyyy Bacalar in October ☀️ If you’re wondering what Bacalar looks like during offseason… its a total paradise! The town is so calm, the weather is perfect with a light morning drizzle, and you will probably be the only guest at your hotel. And according to the locals, everything is way cheaper during this time of year😉 #traveltiktok #mexicotravel #mexicodestinations #bacalar #bacalarmexico #quintanaroo #beautifuldestinations ♬ Me Fui de Vacaciones – Bad Bunny

Wonderful Boutique Hotels

Not a fan of huge, sprawling all-inclusives?  Bacalar is the destination for you.

It’s full of wonderful boutique hotels, some with amazing views of the lagoon.

Many of the hotels are eco-friendly and wellness-focused and perfect for relaxation.

Why Getting To Bacalar Will Be Easier Than Ever Now

Bacalar is trending now, but wait until the Maya Train is fully operational.

It will allow tourists to travel between Bacalar and other popular destinations like Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and Cancun quickly, comfortably, safely, and more affordably.

The final sections of the Maya Train project are scheduled to be completed by the end of February.

Once they are, you’ll be able to hop aboard to visit this fascinating and trending destination.
