From its excellent beaches to trend-setting experiences, the sub-drenched region will continue to the top of the charts as one of the most popular destinations for travelers.

This year, destinations like Cancun and Tulum are gearing up for a record-breaking year for travel amid the launching of the Maya Train and other infrastructure projects.

With that in mind, here’s a look at why the Mexican Caribbean was recently ranked one of the top destinations this year.

New Ranking Confirms Mexican Caribbean’s Role As Leading Destination

There’s no doubt that Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean are some of the world’s hottest destinations for travelers. That’s especially the case in 2024, with new statistics indicating yet another record-breaking year on the horizon.

A new ranking by the prestigious Wall Street Journal further cements the region’s role as a major global travel hotspot. The U.S. newspaper recently published a ranking of the top destinations for travelers in 2024, in which the Mexican Caribbean state of Quintana Roo stands out as one of the most sought-after locations for travelers.

According to the Wall Street Journal, new developments in the region’s travel industry mean that travelers can access a wide range of experiences that transcend the confines of the traditional all-inclusive paradigm.

From ancient Mayan landmarks to diverse cultural experiences, the Mexican Caribbean is currently one of the most dynamic and exciting destinations in the world.

It’s thanks to the region’s rich offerings that the Mexican Caribbean is slated to have one of its best years ever for travel, especially as new infrastructure projects come to fruition, including the Maya Train.

The launching of the groundbreaking undertaking opens up new possibilities for travelers. In 2024, travelers can expect destinations in southern Quintana Roo – including Tulum, Bacalar, and Chetumal – to emerge as leading hotspots for travelers.

While Cancun will still continue to be the most popular hotspot for travelers, emerging sub-destinations are set to benefit hugely from the increased mobility provided by the Maya Train project as well as Tulum’s new international airport.

Another popular trend in 2024 will be the region’s numerous Mayan sites, which have recently undergone huge renovations in anticipation of surging travel numbers. From Cobá to el Meco, travelers will soon be able to explore more Mayan sites than ever before.

The Wall Street Journal also took note of the Mexican Caribbean’s excellent hospitality industry, which has produced some of the world’s leading resorts. Known for employees who don’t shy away from going the extra mile for guests, the Mexican Caribbean delivers exceptional service and experiences.

This year, the region will welcome a number of new cutting-edge resort projects, including the SHA Wellness Clinic. These luxurious properties offer much more than traditional all-inclusives, often focusing on intangible elements like well-being, health, and spirituality.

In 2023, Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean welcomed a record number of travelers thanks to strong aerial connections to airports across the globe, but especially to and from the United States.

That trend will continue to strengthen in 2024 as airlines launch new nonstop connections to Tulum International Airport, with carriers like United, American, and Spirit ramping up connections to the hotspot.
