Despite rising travel restrictions across the globe, Mexico is among the few exceptions still attracting a vast number of tourists amidst the pandemic. Cancun alone drew 700,000 tourists in January, while its adjacent island of Cozumel received 125,700 arrivals the same month.
The Cozumel City Council, led by Municipal President, Pedro Joaquín Delbouis, announced that 125,700 tourists visited the Quintana Roo island in January. This data reported by the Tourism Directorate indicates a firm stance for Cozumel’s tourism industry.
Accordingly, the Director of Tourism and Economic Development, Pedro Hermosillo López, explained that of the total number of visitors, 24,643 arrived by air travel, while 101,099 by sea.
Lopez further noted that the average hotel occupancy in Cozumel was above 28%.
Access By Sea
Situated south of Playa del Carmen on the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, the intimate island of Cozumel is between a 25-40 minute trip, depending on the speed of the boat.
A frequent ferry ride from the city center transports passengers from Playa del Carmer to Cozumel each hour.
Tourists from Cancun have access to a shuttle bus to Playa del Carmen, where they can then access the ferry.
Pre-booked airport transfers are a comfortable option for travelers from Cancun International Airport.
Committed to the convenience of its visitors, Mexican tourism authorities continue to actively install testing sites at popular attractions and resorts.
Last week, an on-site testing lab was installed at the Cozumel ferry port, providing both antigen and PCR testing within 20 minutes and two hours, respectively.
Access By Air
American, Delta, and United Airlines all service direct flights to Cozumel Airport (CZM). From the U.S., American Airlines, Sun Country Air, and Frontier fly most frequently to Cozumel.
Most recently, Frontier airline launched a new route between Denver and Cozumel. As of February 13, it will operate every Saturday.
In this regard, Senior Vice President of commercial at Frontier, Daniel Shurz, stated:
“We’re delighted to begin nonstop flights from Denver to Cozumel, offering a third nonstop route from Denver to Mexico, joining service to Cancun and Puerto Vallarta {…} This island destination is known for its scenic beaches and relaxed atmosphere – the perfect place to unplug and unwind in the sun.”
American Airlines added a new weekly route from Philadelphia to Cozumel on Saturdays, while Southwest will resume daily flights from Houston beginning March 11.
In response to the new additions in air traffic, Hermosillo López said:
“A new flight will also be received from Philadelphia from the American Airlines airline, this number of activities means a new record of operations for the island in this stage of tourist reactivation and recovery.”
