If you are heading to Tulum for a spring getaway, the first thing you will notice isn’t just the pristine beaches or the jungle clubs—it is the massive, highly visible police and military presence.
As the peak holiday travel season hits the Mexican Caribbean, local authorities are refusing to take any chances with visitor safety. In Tulum, Mayor Diego Castañón has officially launched a new 2026 operation. The goal is simple: reinforce security, prevent incidents, and aggressively protect the tourists driving the city’s economy. There are also major security operations launching across Cancun and Playa Del Carmen.

We at The Cancun Sun are skipping the raw crime stats and focusing on what this actually means for your vacation. Here is a look at the most common safety issues travelers are facing right now, and exactly how you can navigate the Riviera Maya safely this spring.
Tulum: Operation Holy Week 2026
The deployment in Tulum is highly strategic. The city has positioned approximately 200 operational personnel and a fleet of 70 rapid-response vehicles directly across the beaches, main access points, and high-traffic tourist zones.
Seeing tactical trucks rolling past your boutique hotel can be jarring, but it is a proactive deterrent, not a reaction to an active crisis.
The Live Data: According to the Traveler Safety Index, Tulum currently holds a safety score of 78, based on 179 recent votes from verified travelers.
The Reality: The heavy security is absolutely necessary for the nightlife zones. The primary concern reported by actual tourists is assault (9 recent reports), which is almost entirely isolated to the late-night nightclub and jungle party areas. This is followed closely by theft (6 reports) and localized scams (6 reports).
The Fix: If you are hitting the nightlife circuit, you must stay sharp. Do not wander away from the main strips alone at 3:00 AM, and always secure verified transportation back to your hotel before you start drinking.
Playa del Carmen: The 500-Officer Shield
Tulum is not acting alone. Just an hour north, Playa del Carmen is dealing with even denser foot traffic and has effectively locked down its primary tourist corridors to match Tulum’s efforts.

The city has deployed over 500 active officers and military personnel to aggressively patrol Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue) and the main beachfront.
The Live Data: Playa del Carmen boasts an incredibly strong safety score of 92, backed by 443 recent votes from verified travelers.
The Reality: While you are highly insulated from violent street crime here, the nightlife scene requires extreme caution. The most common problem reported by travelers is tainted alcohol or druggings.
The Fix: The rule here is non-negotiable: when you are at a bar or beach club, never leave your drink unattended. Keep your hand over your glass, and if you turn your back on your drink, buy a new one immediately.
Cancun & The 7,000-Troop Regional Blanket
Zooming out, the operations in Tulum and Playa del Carmen are part of a massive state-wide initiative. Quintana Roo authorities have authorized a staggering deployment of over 7,000 military, federal, and local police personnel to protect the entire coast.
This massive force includes the National Guard locking down infrastructure and hundreds of Tourist Police officers walking the Cancun Hotel Zone.

The Live Data: Cancun’s safety score remains elite, sitting at 92 with a massive 1,522 recent traveler votes confirming the secure environment.
The Reality: With the troops handling physical security, your biggest threat in Cancun is financial. The overwhelming majority of reports focus strictly on scams. This specifically includes aggressive, deceptive timeshare tactics inside the airport terminal and extreme overcharging on transportation by unauthorized drivers.
The Fix: Do not stop to talk to anyone inside the airport terminal once you grab your bags. Pre-book your private airport transfer before you land, and know exactly what your ride should cost before you step outside.
Currently the US State Department is a Level 2 for Quintana Roo – Exercise Increased Caution which is the same levels as popular destinations in Europe including London and Paris. It was last updated August 12, 2025.
Be Safe & Enjoy Your Trip
For international tourists heading to Tulum or anywhere else on the coast, this massive deployment is incredibly good news. It means you are vacationing in one of the most heavily guarded, highly monitored environments in the hemisphere. Let the security forces handle the heavy lifting, keep a close eye on your drinks and your wallet, and enjoy your trip.

Why would anyone want to go to a place where you couldn't turn your head from your drink? And if those places are known, why are they open? As far as adding all the military and various police in combat/riot gear making tourists feel safe, ridiculous. I've lived in Mexico since 2012 and have never understood that mentality. The message tourists get is that there really must be things to be afraid of. I was in Oaxaca recently, saw very few police and felt quite safe.
