3 New Rules At Cancun Airport That Tourists Need To Know About

Last Updated

Arriving at any international airport, especially for the first time, can be a somewhat intimidating experience, particularly when it’s a large airport like Cancun.

Most airports come with a little bit of chaos, but Cancun Airport is experiencing more than usual right now due to ongoing issues with transportation providers.

These issues have led to officials implementing three new rules at Cancun Airport that tourists need to know about.

Restrictions On Exiting The Airport

The first new rule has to do with how tourists exit the airport to the parking lot or transportation pickup area.

Currently, there is only one access point for travelers to exit the airport building.

This makes leaving the airport much more inconvenient for travelers because it takes more time to get out, particularly for those further from the exit point.

Closed Exits

Because tourists are being redirected to just one exit location, several other airport exits have been closed and should be avoided.

Additionally, the main road leading up to the passenger pickup area has been closed as well.

This makes it more difficult for passengers to get picked up, particularly those who are either waiting for family to pick them up or waiting for hotel transfer services.

Warnings Posted

Warnings have been posted throughout the airport that tourists need to follow.

They warn that tourists should only use authorized transportation providers to get to their hotels because they are safer.

Security is also in place to warn tourists about using authorized providers as well.

Pirate Transportation At Cancun Airport

For quite some time now, there has been an issue with pirate transportation providers at Cancun Airport.

These are unlicensed, unregistered individuals, usually posing as taxi drivers, who find a way onto the airport property to offer their services to tourists who need to get to their hotel.

It puts tourists at risk because the drivers could be anybody, including criminals with bad intentions.

Furthermore, since they are not registered there’s no way to tell if they have the necessary insurance to cover travelers if an accident should occur.

The Ongoing Dispute Between Uber And Taxi Drivers

Another issue that has led to the implementation of these new rules is the ongoing dispute between Uber and taxi drivers.

These disputes have led to delays for passengers getting to and from the airport.

Additionally, physical confrontations between drivers and security guards have occurred as well.

Uber At Cancun Airport

Last year it was announced that Uber would eventually be able to operate at the airport, but that change has yet to come to fruition.

Uber drivers claim that they are authorized to pick up at the airport, but the National Guard says otherwise.

They are preventing Uber drivers from having access to the airport to pick up passengers.

This is all in the name of protecting tourists arriving in Cancun.

Authorized Transportation Services To Use When Arriving At Cancun Airport

Without the option of using Uber to get from Cancun Airport to your hotel, the concern over pirate transportation providers, and the fear of aggressive taxi drivers, you’re probably wondering which authorized transportation service to use upon arrival.

There are a few that are not part of all of this chaos.

One is the ADO bus service, which is inexpensive and easy to use.

Shuttles offered at the airport are another great option. Prices vary depending on whether you book a private or a shared shuttle.

Private car service is perhaps the best way to get to and from the airport though because it’s safe and more comfortable.

Whichever you use, booking in advance will save you a lot of stress. You won’t have to try to navigate through all of the issues with transportation at the airport right now.

A friend usually picks me up from terminal 4, is that no longer an option? Or?

Again, the onus is put on the traveler. Again, the government and airport authority have put a band-aid on a problem that requires major surgery. Only having one egress for passengers will create a choke point for ALL transportation providers... authorized or not to congregate. A road closure inhibiting private vehicles to pick up passengers...very brilliant.
