Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean are once again topping the charts as some of the trendiest vacation destinations in the world as the region braces itself for a record summer season.

With great popularity comes an even greater responsibility, which is why officials are investing a record amount in bolstering safety and security for visitors.

Safety is undoubtedly a major priority for the Mexican Caribbean’s new government, which recently announced significant improvements to strengthen its already sizeable law enforcement apparatus.

With that in mind, here are three reasons why Cancun is set to become safer than ever for travelers.

Record Investment In New Law Enforcement Equipment

The Mexican Caribbean state of Quintana Roo is prioritizing safety for residents and visitors with the appointment of a new Secretariat for Security. Julio César Gómez Torres recently took up the new role of overseeing security operations across Cancun and other tourism hotspots.

One of the government’s main priorities has been the acquisition of new modern vehicles and resources to bolster security efforts. Mara Lezama, the head of the regional executive, recently announced the deployment of 689 new vehicles, over 500 anti-bullet vets, and a helicopter to aid in deterring organized crime in the area.

And while those investments represent just a fraction of what’s being done to protect citizens, the fight against organized crime is becoming increasingly complex, often involving the latest in cutting-edge law enforcement resources.

Enhanced Patrols In Popular Resort Areas

Another key measure being undertaken by law enforcement agencies is enhanced police patrols across Quintana Roo’s main resort hotspots.

According to law enforcement sources, most patrols are being carried out in the northern regions of Quintana Roo, namely CancunIsla Mujeres, and Playa del Carmen. Not only are many of those areas among the most densely populated, but they also welcome the lion’s share of North American travelers.

Together with reinforcements from the national level – the National Guard, Navy, and Army – local police agencies are now using new state-of-the-art equipment to bolster a range of security operations.

From traffic safety to surveillance, travelers can expect to see more police checks across Cancun, Tulum, and Playa del Carmen, where law enforcement is most visible.

According to Quintana Roo’s Secretariat for Citizen Safety, “We are carrying out preventive operations to detect illegal substances, weapons, as well as to verify individuals with court orders,” the agency said in a statement.

Fresh Troop Deployments

In addition to obtaining a range of high-end tools to fight organized crime and protect travelers, Cancun has just received a major contingent of troops for the summer.

Although typically much quieter than the busy winter months, this summer is set to be one of the busiest on record, with resorts across Cancun reporting occupancy rates of over 85%.

And with skyrocketing popularity, officials are committed to maintaining the city’s unparalleled reputation as a safe and welcoming destination. That’s why it was recently announced that dozens of troops from the country’s National Guard would be deployed across the city’s hotel zone to prevent drug trafficking from affecting travelers.

Aside from targeting criminals, Cancun’s increasingly visible law enforcement presence will help secure the city’s lively streets during the nighttime, when travelers are most at risk for pickpocketing and other forms of petty crime.

And while Cancun is expected to see major improvements to its crime levels, travelers should still maintain a high degree of situation awareness on their next tropical getaway.
