3 Ways Cancun Plans To Improve The Airport Experience And Protect Tourists

Last Updated

Millions of tourists arrive at Cancun Airport every year, and most of them probably have a pretty good experience, but not all travelers arriving in Cancun do.

There are several complaints that some tourists have, but officials are working on how to fix those issues.

There are three specific ways in which Cancun plans to improve the airport experience and protect tourists.

Tourists Inside of Cancun Airport

#1 – Cracking Down On Pirate Transport Services

One of the things that some tourists have to deal with when arriving in Cancun is pirate transport services, most commonly pirate taxis.

Pirate taxis and pirate transport services offer services without the proper concessions and licenses to operate.

The problem with this is that the drivers are not vetted by an official organization.

The Risks Of Using Pirate Transport Services

This puts tourists at risk of not being protected because drivers may not have proper insurance to cover them if they get into an accident.

Additionally, without vetting, there is no way to know the background of the driver, who could have a criminal history.

The Tourism Minister of Quintana Roo, Bernardo Cueto Riestra, commented that one of the “immediate actions” that will be taken is “halting irregular transport services.”

#2 – Ensuring Lower Taxi Fares

There is also an issue with overpriced taxi fares in Cancun as well, and it is a major complaint that tourists have.

Riestra plans to deal with this too, so that visitors to the destination are not being overcharged.

Another one of the ministry’s immediate actions to deal with the issue is “improving taxi fares to ensure they are not determined by supply and demand.”

Cancun’s High Taxi Rates

Fares to get to the Hotel Zone from the airport are only supposed to be in the $5-$20 range for a one-way trip, according to the fee schedule imposed by Cancun.

Some tourists, especially foreign tourists, are charged as much as $100 or more each way, though.

Cancun plans to enforce fairer rates to prevent taxi drivers from overcharging.

#3 – Preventing Acts Of Violence

Another major issue that needs to be dealt with that gives the destination a bad image for tourists is the ongoing dispute between taxi and rideshare app drivers.

Taxi drivers have been violent towards rideshare app drivers several times.

They have also been aggressive towards tourists trying to use rideshare apps to get from the airport to their hotel.

Recent Incidents Involving Aggressive Drivers

Recently, some tourists have been harassed by taxi drivers for trying to use rideshare services.

The drivers were filmed, and it was shared on social media, blocking tourists from getting into the vehicle.

They ended up being arrested and had their licenses revoked permanently.

Officials plan to continue to crack down on these badly behaved drivers so that tourists do not have to experience this kind of harassment.

Tips For Arriving At Cancun Airport

Hundreds of travelers arrive at Cancun Airport every day, so it’s always busy.

You’ll want to get through it as quickly as possible when you arrive so that you can get your vacation started.

To avoid any delays, be sure that you have all of the documents that you’ll need in an easily accessible place, and make sure that you don’t have any prohibited items.

Otherwise, your experience isn’t going to be great right from the start.

It’s also highly recommended that you book your transportation in advance because you can avoid all of the issues mentioned above if you do.

You won’t have to worry about pirate transport services, you’ll know what you’re paying upfront, and you won’t have to worry about aggressive taxi drivers either.

Avoiding these things makes for a much better start to your Cancun vacation.
